Creation of the Energy and Environment Commission

In its Opinion No13 entitled “Air transport in crisis and climate challenge”, which followed the international conference it had organized on March 11 and 12, 2021, the Air and Space Academy formulated a dozen of recommendations relating in particular to:

1. the development of objective and credible information by creating an observatory for the decarbonisation of air transport, neutral and collegial;
2. the value of rapidly developing sustainable synthetic fuel production sectors in parallel with other innovations such as hydrogen or electricity, knowing that they will all be necessary to achieve ambitious goals;
3. the usefulness of a strong political impetus before the 2022 ICAO Assembly so that it adopts long-term emissions objectives and resolutely accelerates the taking into account of the energy transition of the international civil aviation;
4. the organization of a European forum for aviation uses, associating all the parties concerned, internal and external to the sector, in order to develop a common vision on the social utility of air transport and an understanding of the means of reduction of its carbon footprint.

To support and participate in its various actions and reflections, in September the Academy created an Energy and Environment Commission, which today comprises more than 40 European experts, including ten from outside the academy. The installation of this commission took place on December 15, 2021.

In this context, the Air and Space Academy welcomes the launch by Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, Minister of Transport, of the Sustainable Aviation Observatory on December 10, to which it was invited to participate and to which several experts from this Energy and Environment Commission will contribute in various capacities.
