Tribute to Claude Goumy, a leading figure in the European space industry and a member of the Academy

The Air and Space Academy (AAE) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Claude Goumy on September 18, 2026. As a member of the Academy’s Section 2, he dedicated his life to the development and advancement of the French and European space industries.

A key figure in the development of Europe’s space program, from Matra to EADS (now Airbus)

A civil engineer who graduated from ENST in 1962, Claude Goumy began his career at the Laboratoire central des communications before joining Matra Espace in 1967. This marked the beginning of an exceptional rise within the company: starting as an engineer, he oversaw the creation of the Matra Espace center in Toulouse in 1979 and served as its director until 1986, when he became Chairman and CEO of Matra Espace.

His leadership on the European stage was cemented when he became CEO of Matra Marconi Space (1989–1995) and then vice president of Matra Hautes Technologies (1996–1999). He capped off this extraordinary industrial career by serving as a director at EADS from 2000 to 2003, helping to shape the aerospace landscape we know today, before founding and managing CG Conseil.

He chronicled this extraordinary journey in his autobiography, aptly titled From the Creuse to Space Europe, published in 2017 by the AIRITAGE association.

Widely recognized technical and industrial expertise

Beyond his talents as a leader with exceptional strategic vision, Claude Goumy was an inventive engineer who, among other things, filed patents on laser-based radar signal processing. The excellence of his work and his commitment to industry earned him prestigious honors: Officer of the Legion of Honor, Officer of the National Order of Merit, and the Arthur Clarke Foundation Award in 2004. He was also a member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and an emeritus member of the 3AF, which awarded him its Grand Prix.

An active member of the Academy

Elected a full member of the Académie de l’Air et de l’Espace on June 11, 2008, and later an honorary member in late 2015, Claude Goumy was particularly involved in the work of the “Space” committee, to which he contributed his wealth of industrial experience and strategic vision.

The president, the board, and all members of the Air and Space Academy join in sharing the grief of his family, loved ones, and former colleagues, and extend their most sincere condolences to them.
