Herbert Allgeier passes away

The Air and Space Academy is deeply saddened to announce the death of Herbert Allgeier, Honorary Member of our institution since 2011. Born on October 13, 1935 in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany, he passed away on February 10, 2025, leaving behind him a remarkable scientific and institutional legacy.
An engineer by training, Herbert Allgeier began his career in 1958 in the nuclear field, contributing to major technological breakthroughs in Germany, the UK, then Euratom in Brussels and the USA. His career took a decisive turn in 1976 when he joined the European Commission, where he played a key role in European research policy until his retirement in 2000.
Appointed Director General of the European Commission’s Joint Research Center (JRC), he left his mark on the development and implementation of the European Research Framework Program. He played a decisive role in a number of scientific and technological fields, including the creation of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies in Seville, the redefinition of the JRC’s mission, and the structuring of the European Union’s aerospace research programs. His visionary commitment made a major contribution to the development of the European Space Policy, strengthening Europe’s position in these strategic fields.
Herbert Allgeier’s rigor, pioneering spirit and keen sense of public interest had a profound influence on European scientific research. The Air and Space Academy pays tribute to this eminent expert whose exemplary career has shaped the future of science and technology in Europe.
