It is belatedly that we learn the sad news of the death of Jacques Naveau, honorary lawyer and professor, on May 29, 2019 in Saint-Gilles. Born on 28 January 1930 in Brussels, Jacques Naveau left an indelible mark in the field of aviation law and international relations. He had been a member of the Air and Space Academy, Section IV, since 2001.

Jacques Naveau began his career as a lawyer at the Brussels Bar in the 1950s, before devoting himself to his passion for aviation. He has held positions of high responsibility, including as Secretary General of Air Congo and General Counsel of SABENA, where he contributed significantly to the development and regulation of air transport.

His reputation in the field of aviation law has led to him being sought after by several prestigious institutions, including the Université libre de Bruxelles, where he taught aviation law as a lecturer and then professor emeritus. His research and publications, including “International Air Transport Law” and “Europe and Air Transport”, have been authoritative and have helped shape the modern aviation legal landscape.

Jacques Naveau was also a visionary in the field of European integration, having played a central role in the creation of the European Aviation Club and acting as an expert for the European Commission. His commitment to international cooperation and fair regulation of air transport has been widely praised and recognized throughout his career.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Jacques Naveau was honoured as an Officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium. His intellectual legacy and dedication to aviation will continue to inspire future generations of lawyers and aviation professionals around the world.
