Tribute to Philippe Cazin, a leading figure in aerospace research and a member of the Academy

The Academy of Air and Space (AAE) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mr. Philippe Cazin on August 24, 2026. This is an immense loss for the aerospace community, which has lost one of its most brilliant engineers and strategists.

The History of the Ramjet and the Success of the ASMP

A leading figure at the National Office for Aerospace Studies and Research (ONERA), Philippe Cazin had an exceptional career there, closely tied to major advances in French aerospace propulsion. Working in close collaboration with Roger Marguet, he was one of the key figures in the development of ramjet propulsion.

As early as the 1970s, their work focused on hypersonic technology with ambitious studies on the Mach 6 interceptor, dubbed “Scorpion.” Building on this fundamental research, ONERA then refocused on speeds of Mach 2–3 with the development of a proof-of-concept model, followed by an anti-radar missile project. It was this cutting-edge technological expertise that led to the creation of the ramjet for the famous ASMP (Air-to-Ground Medium-Range) missile, a cornerstone of France’s deterrent force. The significance of this exceptional work was recognized with the prestigious Science and Defense Award, presented to Philippe Cazin and two of his colleagues at ONERA for this achievement.

From Strategy to Drone Systems

Throughout his career, Philippe Cazin has applied his remarkable ability to anticipate future trends to all aspects of the Office’s strategic direction. He served as Director of Strategy and Commercial Operations before assuming the role of Senior Advisor.

He also distinguished himself through his early and pioneering expertise in the field of military robotics and drone systems. Quickly becoming one of the leading specialists in the field, he contributed significantly to the theoretical development of these technologies, notably authoring the definitive article on drones in the Encyclopédie Universalis.

A Respected Voice Within the Academy

As a member of the Air and Space Academy, he actively participated in organizing lecture series at the Palais de la Découverte and put his technical expertise and forward-looking perspective to work for the institution. He actively led numerous discussions and symposia on the evolution of aerospace vehicles, bringing a rare intellectual rigor to the sector’s future challenges.

The president, the executive board, all members of the Air and Space Academy, and the permanent staff join in the grief of his family, loved ones, and former colleagues at ONERA, offering them their most sincere condolences.
