Major projects always represent technical, financial and calendar issues of importance to the States or large companies that undertake them. Even if they pose risks, they are irreplaceable engines of innovation and economy.

The two academies believe that it is useful to examine the return of experience obtained on major projects passed in terms not of management methods but rather of general principles to be respected in order to avoid the financial and calendar slippages. This symposium calls on the actors in these past projects to present in a synthetic way what they perceive as the principles necessary for success on the basis of what they have experienced during their project. We will be presenting very successful projects and others who have had more difficulties. These projects come from various backgrounds, aeronautics and space, energy, building and public works, transport because we think very fruitful to cross experiences in all areas. Some have the size of real programs; Some are totally innovative, others are more commercial. There are programs to develop a new object and others to put in place a new evolution of existing systems. Each has its own context and environment that play their part in the progress of the project.

We ask the speakers to avoid any language of wood. It is in no way a matter of assigning notes to the actors of the projects, but of understanding the obstacles encountered and the solutions they propose to overcome them.

At the end of this symposium, we will seek to establish a synthesis that will trace the experiences and make recommendations for future projects, addressed both to the donors and to the directors.
