It is with deep sadness that the Académie de l’air et de l’espace pays tribute to one of its eminent members, Georges Estibal, who passed away on October 28, 2024. Born on August 14, 1934, Georges marked the history of French space engineering and European aeronautics with his passion, commitment and vision, becoming a key figure for his peers and future generations alike.
After graduating from ENSEA in 1958, Georges Estibal embarked on an exemplary career when he joined Matra in 1963, where he quickly put his expertise at the service of space development. His determination and leadership led him to hold positions of great responsibility, including Sales Director of the Space Division and then of MATRA Espace from 1978 to 1989, and from 1990 onwards Deputy Managing Director of MATRA Marconi Space and Managing Director of MATRA Marconi Space France. As Chairman of Intespace from 1993, and as a director of Arianespace and Satcom International, he played a decisive role in the development of the European space industry. His skills and strategic sense make him a key player.
He retired in 1995 and served as a commercial court judge for 2 years. He also oversaw the design and construction of the Cité de l’Espace in Toulouse as Director of Semeccel. In 1997, when the Cité opened, he was appointed President, a role that definitively sealed his contribution to the popularization and accessibility of space for all.
Georges Estibal was also a key player in Toulouse’s public life. As deputy mayor of Toulouse from 2001 to 2008, then city delegate to the Communauté d’agglomération du Grand-Toulouse, he embodied the successful alliance between technical expertise and civic commitment. His dedication to his city was also honored with the Médaille d’Or de la Ville de Toulouse, a testimony to the indelible mark he left on the hearts of Toulousans.
Elected correspondent to the Académie de l’air et de l’espace on June 20, 1996, Georges Estibal became a full member on June 19, 2000, joining Section 2 and the Space Commission, where he generously shared his knowledge and vision with the entire aerospace community. He also served on the International Academy of Astronautics.
Decorated with the Ordre national du Mérite, knight of the Légion d’honneur, and emeritus member of the AAAF, Georges Estibal leaves a legacy of a life dedicated to innovation, sharing and lifting the human spirit to the stars. Honorary President of the Friends of the Cité de l’espace, he contributed until his last days to making the dream of space tangible for the general public, and to encouraging the curiosity of young minds.
At the Académie de l’air et de l’espace, we will remember him as a brilliant colleague and loyal friend, whose passion and integrity nurtured aeronautics and space in France and beyond. His memory will continue to inspire our work, and will remain engraved in our hearts and minds.
A tribute will be paid to him at a forthcoming Academy session.
