Presented by Flight Captain Hans RAHMANN, Former Lufthansa Pilot, Director MayDay Foundation

Increased technology has meant that the role of pilots has changed and might be thought to be easier and less stressful, but in many areas this is certainly not the case which can lead to abnormalities in a pilot’s behaviour and performance directly affecting flight safety. A requirement for a safe operation is a sympathetic management and an understanding/supportive relationship between crew members so any changes in behaviour/personal feelings may be discussed and highlighted if necessary, perhaps also involving families.

Hans Rahmann will describe how his MayDay foundation is furthering this cause by working to boost the long running Peer Support Programmes in his lecture as follows:

Where Control is fair and Trust is just

  • Results of the Task Force after the German Wings Accident in 2015 led to new EASA Regulations.
  • These have to be implemented until August 2020.
  • One of their main focusses is based on Peer Support Programmes (PSPs).
  • EPPSI (European Pilot Peer Support Initiative), being part of the advisory body, supported EASA with expertise from running PSPs for 25+ years.
  • The expectations of the public and the industry need a realistic consideration:
    • What are prerequisites of PSPs, what is life like, what can be achieved and how?
    • What is wishful thinking, where are limits?
