This lecture dedicated to “Decarbonising Air Transport: a question of energy” and organised by the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería Aeronáutica y del Espacio (ETSIAE) and the Air and Space Academy, AAE. With the support of TEDAE y de AIAE
Aviation did not wait until 2023 to start decarbonising. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has set a target of “net zero” CO2 emissions by 2050. The European Union also recently set a target of climate neutrality by replacing kerosene with sustainable, CO2-neutral fuels by 2050. The entire industry has become aware of the role it must play in meeting the climate challenge, with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The use of sustainable fuels and carbon capture and storage are some of the measures to reach that goal. However, the quantities of decarbonised electricity required for air transport are likely to be insufficient to meet the considerable energy needs of European society.
