The viability of small electric air vehicles

By André Bord, former Chief Engineer A320, Airbus, former Technical Director ATR, member of the AAE

The use of electric energy sources deemed “green” for the propulsion of air vehicles seems, for a long time, reserved for small vehicles meeting the needs of intra-urban transport, such as air taxis. The analysis of the state of the art and the perspectives of electrical energy storage allows us to evaluate the specific properties, in particular, in terms of energy and power. The analysis of the energy and power needs as well as the characteristics of the vehicles that can meet the specifications of these vehicles as well as those of the multiple projects proposed helps to clarify their technical viability, and their ecological and economic interest. Will the electric fairy fly?
