Dossier No.24 – The Impact of Aviation on the Atmosphere

Dossier 24 resumes the work begun in 1994 with ANAE’s international colloquium on “Space, Aeronautics and Atmospheric Environment”.

In 1997 a report was published jointly with the Académie des Sciences on “The impact of aircraft on the atmospheric environment and the climate”, followed, in 1998, by ANAE’s Dossier 13 “Impact of aircraft and space launchers on the atmosphere and the climate”.

The present dossier focuses on the impact of subsonic civil aircraft from now until 2050, at cruising altitudes and in the airport vicinity, taking into account forecast traffic growth and technical advances. To achieve a clearer understanding of the scientific processes at work in the atmosphere, especially in the region of the tropopause, it is important to pursue the policy of measurement campaigns on both dedicated and commercial aircraft.

The exchanges between aeronautics specialists and experts on the atmosphere will be highly valuable for both disciplines.
