Avis No.11 – Preparing for green aviation while preserving commercial transport aircraft development know-how in Europe
Commercial aviation is having to cope simultaneously with the huge economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis and the need to rapidly deliver “greener” aviation.
The traditional method of gradual technological enhancement will not allow greener aircraft to be delivered on time. Such a goal can only be met by means of disruptive, step-change technologies, matured and validated up to a global level via an integrated flying technology demonstrator.
This Opinion, jointly published by AAE and DGLR, argues that such a paradigm change will only be achieved in Europe if, as is the case in other continents, airframe, engine and systems manufacturers, indeed the entire European development and production aviation community, are financially supported by the main aviation nations.
By doing so, Europe will prepare the ground for Green Aviation while preserving its aircraft development know-how, thus maintaining its global leadership.
