AAE Dossier n°57 – 2015-2025: The rise of civilian drones

The drone sector is evolving rapidly, particularly in terms of civilian applications. Over the past decade, European regulations have gradually superseded national frameworks, whilst U-Space initiatives aim to integrate drones into air traffic. The market has grown significantly, driven by major technological advances.
Furthermore, recent conflicts have highlighted the growing overlap between civilian and military uses, reinforcing the dual nature of drones. Increasing numbers of consumer drones and the associated risks of malicious use have also led to the development of counter-drone systems.
Against this backdrop, AAE and 3AF present an overview based on a series of interviews, along with recommendations to strengthen European competitiveness.
