Dossier 54 – Progress in air transport automation: new systemic and human competencies

Digital technology has brought about a revolution with the introduction of automated systems into the various components of air transport. AAE, noting that creeping changes are appearing in the competencies required of the corresponding players and organisations, organised workshops on the subject in 2021 and 2022, bringing together the main players in the sector.
Extending the reflection by a more systemic approach, this Dossier No. 54 is aimed at researchers, instructors and practitioners in all sectors facing similar problems, i.e. involving a significant level of human involvement with automated systems and the need to ensure a high level of safety. Three professions were identified as priorities: aircraft pilots, air traffic controllers and systems development engineers.
The result is a set of recommendations to ensure that human competencies match those of automated systems and also organisations, together with an original, objective, analysis of the pilot’s profession that could serve as a model.
