Adaptive optics has revolutionized high-resolution imaging by compensating in real time for the adverse effects of atmospheric turbulence. Now a key component of giant telescopes, this multi-disciplinary technology enables us to explore the universe with unprecedented image quality, monitor our immediate surroundings and focus laser beams at very great distances. Using a number of recent examples, and looking to the future with the PROVIDENCE project as an example, this conference will review the major scientific and technical advances and future challenges of adaptive optics.
