As part of the “Rendez-vous Espace” 2024 lecture series organized by the Association des Amis de la Cité de l’espace in partnership with the Cité de l’espace and the Académie de l’air et de l’espace.
Space for health
To mark the start of the new academic year, the Friends of the Cité de l’espace are offering a conference on the theme of space medicine, covering the beginnings of life sciences in space, a presentation of the constraints of space missions on astronauts’ health, and the current and future activities of MEDES, the Toulouse Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology.
Founded by CNES and Toulouse University Hospital in 1989, the Institut de Médecine et Physiologie Spatiale (MEDES) works to maintain and develop French expertise in space medicine and physiology, and to promote the applications of space research in the field of health.
The conference will focus on three main themes: the pioneers of space medicine and the creation of MEDES, space medicine and its challenges in 2024 for manned space missions to Mars, and finally MEDES, today and tomorrow.
With the presence of
- Audrey Berthier: A biomedical engineer and graduate of the École d’Ingénieurs Telecom Physique Strasbourg, she joined GIE MEDES in 2001 as head of European space-health co-innovation projects. She was promoted to Operations Director in 2018 and has been GIE’s Executive Director since 2020.
- Dr Bernard Comet: Aeronautical engineer, ENSAE graduate and doctor of medicine, he joined CNES in 1983, where he took part in the Hermès program and served as crew physician for manned missions carried out in bilateral cooperation or within the ESA framework. From 1994 to 2019 he was Chairman of the ESA Medical Committee. He joined the GIE MEDES “Institut de Médecine et de Physiologie Spatiales” in 2001, where he now acts as consultant and correspondent for the Académie de l’air et de l’espace.
- Laurent Braak: An aeronautical engineer with a degree from ENSAE and a doctorate in biomedical engineering, he joined CNES in 1979 and took part in the PVH “Premier Vol Habité” mission. He joined GIE MEDES at its creation in 1989 as project manager, then deputy director, before becoming executive director from 1998 to 2016.
