Presentation of Dossier 56, “Seven Recommendations to Secure the Future of European Launchers.” The ESA Ministerial Council, which met in Seville in November 2023, convened without its launchers being available, due to the delay of Ariane 6 and problems encountered by Vega-C. ESA chose to turn this obstacle into an opportunity by launching a competition among European small-launcher projects—the European Launcher Challenge (ELC)—to foster innovation, boost competitiveness, and prepare the next generation of launchers. In the second half of 2024, significant progress was made, with the successful first launch of Ariane 6 and two flights of Vega and Vega-C. Against a backdrop of intensified international competition, particularly with the United States, Europe must reaffirm its space ambitions.
That is why the Space Commission of the Air and Space Academy (AAE) has issued seven recommendations to secure the future of European launch vehicles.
