SUMMARY:Decarbonizing Regional Aviation: An Incremental Approach
DESCRIPTION:By Stéphane Viala\, Senior Vice President Engineering\, Head of Design Organization\, ATR \nATR (Regional Transport Aircraft) is the world leader in the regional turboprop segment. ATR created in 1981 to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2021. Since its creation\, the ATR has relied on a low carbon footprint by implementing a policy of incremental evolution of the product and its services. With a consumption of 40% lower than regional jets and -20% compared to other turboprops in the regional market\, ATR has been able to evolve its engines\, avionics and systems while innovating and remaining at the forefront of technology. Minimizing the carbon footprint of our products as well as the impact of our business has always been in our DNA. That is why in this presentation we will share our vision of the future of regional aviation and ATR’s contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of aeronautics through an incremental and realistic approach. \nImage credit:© ATR \n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe cycle of conferences “D’Air et d’Espace” 2022 resumes from April only in person \n\n \n\n In partnership with:

SUMMARY:Ultraefficient Aircraft Technologies - Key Building Blocks on the Way to Sustaineable Flight
DESCRIPTION:Mini Symposium in cooperation between the DGLR (Fachbereich L2 – Bemannte Luftfahrzeuge) and the Air and Space Academy \nUltraefficient Aircraft technologies for low drag\, low weight and low specific fuel consumption are more important than ever to master the challenge towards more sustainable flight. Significant efficiency improvements are mandatory to limit the fuel consumption for next generation aircraft\, either to drastically reduce the CO2-impact from still fossile kerosene based propulsion or to mitigate the drawback from the significant affordability challenge of novel zero emission fuels (SAF or H2). \nBesides this efficiency challenge also a the capability for more flexible flight trajectories is key\, to mitigate non-CO2 impacts on global warming (such as contrails) and to drastically cut noise emissions \nNevertheless an full compliance in terms of certifiability\, manageable manufacturing cost and full operational compatibility to the air transport system are crucial requirements to ensure economically viable future products. \nOn this mini symposium a group of experts from DLR\, Airbus\, Bauhaus Luftfahrt\, Universities and DGLR & AAE will present and discuss the challenges and latest technological initiatives and developments in short lectures and pitches. An extensive podium discussion with the lectures and the audience will conclude the symposium. \nProgramme:\n17.00 – Welcome by AAE (J. Klenner) & DGLR (D. Reckzeh) \n17.15  – Setting the scene: The Zero Global Warming impact challenge for aviation (Bauhaus Luftfahrt\, Mirko Hornung) . \n17.30 – Up to the limits of physics: The -50% aircraft (DLR\, AAE\, Cord Rossow) \n17:45 – Integration of advanced propulsion and novel energy carriers (NFL / TU Braunschweig\, Jens Friedrichs) \n18.10 – Ultraefficient Aircraft Technology (Airbus\, D.Reckzeh) \n18:25 – Building the future disruptive wing (structures\, integration\, industrialization concepts) (DLR\, Tobias Wille) \n18.45 – Break / Coffee & Snacks \n19.15 – Advanced Aircraft Design competence in the academic landscape (RWTH Aachen\, Eike Stumpf) \n19:30 – Digital & Integrated chains “up to certification” (DLR\, Kristof Risse) \n19:45 – Panel Discussion and Q&A from Auditorium \n \n Inscription obligatoire (Site web de la DGLR)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Light on the dark side of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:By Peter von Ballmoos\, astrophysicist\, teacher-researcher at the University of Toulouse\, IRAP. \nDark matter\, dark energy\, inflation\, baryonic asymmetry are today essential hypotheses to explain the Universe we observe. While the very nature of these hypotheses remains stubbornly obscure\, their mathematical formalism manages to model the observations with a very high degree of precision. This paradox reminds us of the situation in which astronomy found itself until Kepler’s time: the modeling of epicycles was successfully used to describe the apparent motion of planets. And the same question we have been asking ever since: is “saving phenomena” enough? \nImage credit: © R.R \n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe cycle of conferences “D’Air et d’Espace” 2022 resumes from April only in person \n\n\n\n In partnership with:

SUMMARY:RAeS Conference - Towards a Space Enabled Net Zero Earth
DESCRIPTION:Continuous observations from satellites over multiple decades have provided a critical contribution to our knowledge and understanding of climate change. This incredible technology has helped determine accurate variations of key climate parameters such as sea level\, greenhouse gases\, arctic sea ice and forest cover. \nGoing forward into the new decade the space sector is showing continued resilience and growth and is advancing rapidly with exciting satellite missions planned which will enable observations at higher resolution of environmental parameters such as air quality\, flood risk and lake levels. Such observations at the local level will also help allow businesses across the globe to assess their climate risk in sectors such as finance & insurance\, cities and built environment\, and critical infrastructure. Furthermore\, satellite navigation and communication technologies are crucial across sectors such as aviation and maritime in helping to reduce carbon footprint. \nLonger term still\, space technology can offer some global net zero game-changers before 2050 where the UK can take a lead. An example is to harness solar power from space and to beam it securely and safely to a fixed area on the earth. \nConference objectives \n\nIdentify the innovations and actions using space technology that can help the UK (and the world) achieve net zero in line with pledges made at COP26.\nInvolve senior stakeholders in industry\, academia and government to debate our space-enabled vision\, and to leverage multi-year support from the public and private sector to drive forward new technology and exploitation delivery mechanisms.\n\nAll the above will form the basis of our exciting conference programme\, where a series of presentations and panel sessions will span the following topics: \n\nHow can we use space technology to innovatively monitor and attribute emissions to enable the monitoring of net zero global progress?\nHow we can integrate satellite information products to support businesses in assessing and mitigating climate and supply chain risk?\nWhat approaches can be utilised from satellite technology to enable the reduction of our carbon footprint from business and wider society?\nIs next generation technology to harness solar power from space a game changer or science fiction?\n\n  \n \n Information & registration

SUMMARY:The challenges of propulsion of the rotary wing aircraft of the future
DESCRIPTION:By Pascal Dauriac\, Head of R&T and Future Programs\, Safran Helicopter Engines. \nThe helicopter\, like all air transport\, is emerging from an unprecedented crisis caused by COVID19\, despite very specific types of use. If it did not go through this period in the same way as commercial aviation\, it shares with it the same ambition in terms of reducing its environmental footprint and permanently seeking safety. And in a context of strong competition\, the challenges of propulsion are numerous: What future for thermal formulas? What place for electrification\, new fuels? How to combine technological complexity and economic competitiveness? \nWe will have to implement levers that go beyond the scope of design\, exploring the digitalization of manufacturing and maintenance processes and the way of thinking about the service provided to our operators. \nCrédit image : ©Safran Helicopter Engines\n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe conference will be accessible remotely. SUMMARY:Mega Constellations
DESCRIPTION:Satellites illuminated by the sun are visible in the night sky – even with the naked eye for the brightest – and are a source of light pollution for astronomers. Their number could reach several tens of thousands in a few years. What are the consequences for large observatories\, but also for small telescopes and for lovers of the starry sky? \n“Mega constellations\, their applications”\, presented by Bernard FOING\, Director EuroMoonMars\, prof Leiden/Amsterdam/EPFL \n“Theirimpact on astronomy”\, presented by Olivier HAINAUT\, astronomer at ESO\, Munichaux \nThe double conference will be broadcast live on the Youtube channel of the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie. \n\nIn partnership with:

SUMMARY:Why keep going into space? The ethical imperative.
DESCRIPTION:By Jacques Arnould\, ethics expert\, CNES. \nSixty years after the launch of the first Sputnik\, space has entered the NewSpace era. The arrival of new state actors and private entrepreneurs has upset the balance found after the race to the Moon\, the gradual occupation of the Earth’s orbits\, the exploration of the solar system. The promises of space tourism\, the projects to exploit the resources of space arouse interest\, enthusiasm\, but also criticism\, even opposition to the continuation of the space adventure. So many opportunities\, so many reasons to question the purposes of our space activities\, their social\, political\, but also psychological\, even spiritual consequences. Perhaps never has space been so fascinating \nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n  \n  \nImage credit: ©NASA/Shane Kimbrough\, 2021 (2nd spacewalk (EVA) by Thomas Pesquet and Shane Kimbrough during the Alpha mission on June 20\, 2021.) \n\nGiven the evolution of the health crisis\, this conference will take place remotely. SUMMARY:The viability of small electric air vehicles
DESCRIPTION:By André Bord\, former Chief Engineer A320\, Airbus\, former Technical Director ATR\, member of the AAE \nThe use of electric energy sources deemed “green” for the propulsion of air vehicles seems\, for a long time\, reserved for small vehicles meeting the needs of intra-urban transport\, such as air taxis. The analysis of the state of the art and the perspectives of electrical energy storage allows us to evaluate the specific properties\, in particular\, in terms of energy and power. The analysis of the energy and power needs as well as the characteristics of the vehicles that can meet the specifications of these vehicles as well as those of the multiple projects proposed helps to clarify their technical viability\, and their ecological and economic interest. Will the electric fairy fly? \n              \nImage credit: airbus-Airbus City © \n\nFree admission (without registration). SUMMARY:The Hubble Space Telescope: 30 Years of Discovery\, Symbol of Human Engineering
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Roger-Maurice Bonnet\, astrophysicist\, director of research emeritus at the CNRS (Paris Institute of Astrophysics)\, former Scientific Director of ESA\, former Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute in Bern (Switzerland)\, member of the Royal Academy of Swedish Science\, an honorary member of the AAE. \nFor thirty years Hubble\, remains the largest space telescope in operation today\, offering the most piercing and accurate look at the Universe and its evolution. Thanks to a series of five astronaut repair and maintenance missions from NASA and ESA\, it now offers us the most beautiful images of the objects of the Universe\, from the planets to the most distant galaxies\, monstrous black holes\, stars\, from their birth to their end\, revealing the astonishing acceleration of its expansion 4 billion years ago attributed to the mysterious dark energy. Thanks to astronomers around the world\, it will go down in history as a magnificent achievement of human genius. \n \nPlease register before September 27\, 2021 to receive login information \n\n\n Oops! SUMMARY:In search of a second genesis of life: beyond Earth and Mars\, to exoplanets
DESCRIPTION:By Frances Westall\, geologist\, astrobiologist\, director of the exobiology group of the Centre for Molecular Biology in Orleans\, president of the European Association of Astrobiology. \nHas life appeared on Earth only\, or is it a “cosmic phenomenon”\, as thinks the Nobel laureate\, Christian de Duve ? Can it appear everywhere or are there certain constraints? Indeed\, while the ingredients of life – organic molecules\, water\, energy – are generally available\, the geological context must still be relevant\, i.e. a rocky planet with hydrothermal activity in a context Volcanic. Such conditions for the emergence of ex novo life existed on several planets in the young Solar System (Earth\, Mars\, perhaps Venus and even now icy satellites\, such as Europe or Enceladus)\, but are no longer present\, even on the Earth. However\, the high number of suitable planets in the Universe suggests that life may be widespread\, in a rather primitive form\, such as anoxygenic microorganisms\, the problem being rather how to identify them on an exoplanet. \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nRegister by June 28\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:Dynamics of natural and agricultural landscapes: Contribution of Sentinel time series of images
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Laurence Hubert-Moy\, member of the Scientific Programmes Committee (SPC) of CNES\, University of Rennes\, AAE correspondent \nDeforestation\, urbanization\, drainage and cultivation of wet grasslands\, melting glaciers\, advances in deserts… are all changes that are happening all over the world. In the context of climate change\, monitoring these landscape dynamics is an important challenge in terms of the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity. Intra- and interannual landscape dynamics can be observed using the Sentinel-1 and 2 satellite time series. The contribution of this data will be illustrated by several examples of application in natural and agricultural landscapes. \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nSign up by May 24\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:CSG: a French\, European\, Guyanese space centre
DESCRIPTION:By Bernard Chemoul\, General Inspector\, CNES. \nThe Guiana Space Centre was the result of the national political will in the mid-1960s to endow France with an autonomous space policy. With its exceptional location\, the CSG is the spaceport of Europe\, an essential asset of the European Space Agency and the flight base of all European launchers. The CSG emblematic of the success of European technology is also located in a territory facing great structural difficulties\, and its presence illuminates the delays of Guyana without being able to fill them… \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nRegister by April 26\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:55th 3AF International Conference AERO2020+1
DESCRIPTION:The 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics is an annual event organised by the French Aeronautics and Aerospace Society (3AF) at French venues known for their activity in the field of aeronautics and/or aerospace technology. \nThe Conference is an excellent opportunity for scientific exchange between scientists from industry\, research institutions and academia. Scientists and engineers from other fluid mechanics fields are also welcome. \nEach year the Conference addresses a different topic in the field of aerodynamics. It is organised on the basis of five halfdays of technical presentations\, each introduced by a keynote conference given by a recognised expert. The Conference is concluded by a technical visit in connection with the conference subject. \nIn 2021\, the Conference will be hosted by the Pprime Institute (CNRS\, ISAE-ENSMA\, University of Poitiers) in Poitiers. This 55th 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics (AERO2020+1) focuses on Turbulent flows in Aerodynamic Applications. \nTurbulent flow regimes\, compressible or otherwise\, are omnipresent in high-Reynolds-number aerodynamic systems. Accurate prediction is required to anticipate and optimise the performance of new concepts. Optimisation is particularly important where the reduction of chemical and noise pollution is concerned. Robustness and safety for real weather and varying environmental conditions are also critical for aeronautical/terrestrial transportation and for renewable energy industries. These constraints have driven significant progress in the academic and industrial communities in recent years\, for instance in the fields of Hybrid\, Large-Eddy simulation and Lattice-Boltzmann approaches for the modelling and analysis of unsteady industrial flows; or in the development of measurement methodologies that are now frequently used in the context of data-driven modelling. New theoretical frameworks have appeared for the description of out-of-equilibrium turbulence\, and for the reduction and modelling of coherent structures and their sound radiation. These frameworks provide a foundation for the development of flow-control strategies. The prediction of transition to turbulence in complex flows\, particularly important in the aeronautical sector\, is also an active domain. \nMore information : www.3af-aerodynamics2020.com
