SUMMARY:Decarbonizing Air Transport and Reaching Autonomous Human Spaceflight : Two Topical Challenges for Europe
DESCRIPTION:A meeting organized by the Air and Space Academy  and the Center of Aerospace Research of Sapienza\, University of Rome \n\nAbout the decarbonisation of aviation\, the conference will focus on its four main pillars: continuous performance improvement\, sustainable alternative fuels\, carbon capture\, and ”sobriety”. The crucial development of alternative fuels raises the question of the very high level of electrical energy required. \nThe other subject of the conference is why and how Europe should acquire autonomous access to space for its astronauts\, opening the door to exploration through a comprehensive political commitment. \nProgramme\n\n9:30 – Welcome of guests \n9:45 – Welcome address \n\n\n\nCarlo Massimo Casciola (Dean of the Industrial and Civil Engineering School\, Sapienza)\nFrancesco Nasuti (Director of CRAS\, Sapienza)\nAntonio Vinolo (AAE Honorary Member)\n\n\n\n 10:15 – Green Aviation\n\n\n\nThe Decarbonization of the Aviation Sector\, Eric Dautriat (Vice President\, AAE)\nTBD\, Franco Mastroddi (Sapienza)\n\n\n\n11:30 – Coffee Break \n11:45 – Human Space Flight\n\n\n\nEuropean Human Space Flight\, Jurgen Ackermann (AAE)\nTBD\, Mariano Bizzarri (Sapienza)\nSpace Exploration: executive summary of the Torino Conference (May 2023)\, Eric Dautriat (AAE)\nTBD\, Massimo Claudio Comparini (TAS)\n\n\n\n13:05 – Closing remarks: European perspectives in aviation and human spaceflight\n\n\n\nMario Cosmo (Science and Research Director\, ASI)\nPaolo Gaudenzi (AAE)\nFrancesco Grasso (AAE) \n\n\n\n13:30 – Lunch\n\nfree admission\, in partnership with: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n New publication! \nOpinion N°20: Decarbonising air transport\nAir transport is global: it has enabled an incredible expansion in relations between peoples. It intends to be sustainable in the face of the climate challenge and is aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. \nDecarbonising aviation involves 4 levers: (a) a sharp reduction in aircraft fuel consumption; (b) the use of alternative fuels to kerosene; (c) carbon capture and storage to “neutralise” emissions from the remaining fossil kerosene; (d) sobriety… Read More \n\nAvailable as a book (10€) or as a PDF (free download)

SUMMARY:The Guiana Space Centre opens wide the Door to Outer Space
DESCRIPTION:By Marie-Anne Clair\, former director of the Guiana Space Centre\, CNES\, AAE correspondent \nThe powerful blast that is disrupting the space transportation ecosystem has not spared the Guiana Space Center. The current model\, in which Arianespace is the sole user of the space base\, has fizzled out and the CSG\, like an airport hosting several airlines\, will open its doors to new launch operators from the New Space sphere. \nAlso challenged by the emergence of many competing spaceport projects in Europe\, its modernization and competitiveness are more than ever existential questions requiring a large-scale renovation that we will describe at this conference. \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n [image] ©CNES

SUMMARY:How Airbus overtook Boeing thanks to the success of the A320 Family
DESCRIPTION:By Georges Ville\, 60 years with Airbus\, former President of the AAE \nAirbus Industrie became interested in the single-aisle market in 1981 and in 1984 launched the A320 family equipped with CFM56 engines with the support of Air France. Technological innovations and visionary choices in the definition of the aircraft are helping to anticipate its development towards the A320 neo; Boeing will try to follow suit\, not without risk\, with the 737 Max. Airbus caught up with Boeing in 1999 and overtook it in 2019. The speaker will recall this winning strategy and the lessons for future generations. \n\nConference organized as part of the National Engineering Days 2024 (JNI) \n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n [image] © AIRBUS – Computer Graphic by i3m

SUMMARY:Mankind in Search of Its Origins in the Age of the James Webb Space Telescope
DESCRIPTION:By Sylvie Vauclair\, astrophysicist\, professor emeritus\, member of the AAE \nSince the dawn of humanity\, human beings have sought to understand the world in which they live and to situate themselves in relation to it. Science and technology have led to spectacular advances that have challenged old ideas and changed humanity’s self-image of the cosmos. After all the discoveries made by the Hubble Space Telescope\, the JWST is a new stepping stone in this search for our origins. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \nConference organized as part of the National Engineering Days 2024 (JNI) \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n[image] © NASA\, ESA\, CSA

SUMMARY:GEIPAN studies UAPs/UFOs
DESCRIPTION:By Vincent Costes\, head of GEIPAN at CNES with the participation of Francine Cordier\, GEIPAN investigator \nGEIPAN studies aerospace observations\, unexplained phenomena observed in the sky\, that have been reported to it since 1977 (46 years). This is one of the many missions of the CNES (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales). It’s a very original mission. GEIPAN strives to elucidate the strange\, sometimes unusual or spectacular phenomena that are witnessed on French territory. The explanations are rational. The approach is scientific. It’s science\, it’s CNES in direct contact with and at the service of the population. Vincent COSTES will present the mission and the network organization of this organization. It will show the diversity of the phenomena explained and the interest of the work carried out by GEIPAN. A new phenomenon has just been added to the range of GEIPAN phenomena. This is a very original and little-known phenomenon. It will be presented on this occasion. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n[image] © CNES-GEIPAN

SUMMARY:Decarbonisation of aviation: a race against time
DESCRIPTION:By Jérémy Caussade\, co-founder\, president and chief engineer\, AURA AERO \nAviation naturally tends to want to decarbonize. Simply because his obsession is to spend less to cost less\, especially since for 50 years oil has been more and more expensive. Technological developments are often staged. For barely ten years these innovations have been linked and constitute the expected break because they become economically viable. This is the sesame of the metamorphosis of aviation. It was in 2018 that AURA AERO was founded to take the path. Its choice is to respond quickly and pragmatically to the challenges and demands of light and sports aviation\, but also to the renewal of regional aviation\, of which nearly 3\,000 aircraft are expected by 2050. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n [image]©AURA-AERO-ERA-Electric-Regional-Aircraft

SUMMARY:Satellites for risk and disaster management
DESCRIPTION:By Gil Denis \, Head of Technology Development\, Airbus Defence and Space and Alix Roumagnac \, President\, Predict Services \nClimate change increases people’s exposure to risks in general and hydrometeorological risks in particular. Since the beginning of the space age\, satellites have played an important role in managing risks and major disasters. The two speakers will describe the information provided by satellites before\, during and after a natural disaster according to the type of risk. Following a presentation of the operational use of satellites in combination with other data sources\, this role will be illustrated more specifically in the case of floods and flash floods. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n[image] ©CNES – Airbus DS-Roquebillière distribution seen by the Pléiades satellite in May 2020

SUMMARY:AAE Workshop: Towards new European military helicopter programmes
DESCRIPTION:A forum entitled “Towards New European Military Helicopter Programs”\, organized by the Air and Space Academy\, was held in Paris on June 15\, 2022\, during the Eurosatory Exhibition. \nThis forum confirmed that it is time to prepare the next generation of rotorcraft\, the key points are to define a common set of capability requirements at the European level including UK\, based on a real political will from the member States. The fact that companies are willing to cooperate together is a very positive point. The work continued between the companies and the members of the Academy and led to the establishment of recommendations addressed to all the actors of a military rotorcraft program to be developed in cooperation. \nIt is at this stage that we invite you to participate in a presentation\, September 4\, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm\, in advance of the 49th European Rotorcraft Forum (ERF2023). . During this meeting\, the members of the Academy and of the companies will present their work: recommendations and best practices to achieve a coherent program to reach a high-performance\, flexible rotorcraft platform that meets the needs of armed forces. A second part will allow us to collect your questions and comments. \n\nRegistrations are closed. \n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Go to ERF2023 Programme\n \n Go to ERF2023 registration

SUMMARY:Electric aircraft: the future of urban mobility?
DESCRIPTION:By Alain Cassier\, President of the Program Committee of the UAM by e-VTOL conference\, fellow of the AAE \nMany multi-rotor electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) projects are emerging and target the urban air taxi and urban aeromobility (UAM= Urban Air Mobility) markets. They give hope that everyone will soon be able to move around the city by flying over traffic jams without generating environmental nuisance thanks to electric motorization. Even though some of these projects are reaching the flight test stage and appear close to commissioning\, there are still hurdles to overcome to make this dream a reality. It is therefore proposed to study the conditions under which an urban air transport service could be rapidly deployed. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n[image] ©AAE

SUMMARY:RAeS Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe increased complexity of modern warfare requires the British Armed Forces\, along with its allies in NATO and across the world\, to be prepared to fight as a joint force in a multi-threat environment in order to achieve desired effects in all domains and at the strategic\, operational and tactical levels. In an increasingly complex operating environment\, creativity\, adaptability and resilience are in as high demand as ever. With defence planning being tested by the geopolitical landscape and the war in Ukraine\, it is critical for the armed forces to identify and invest in capabilities needed to face distinct threats and challenges emanating from all strategic directions; from state and non-state actors as well as from cyber and hybrid attacks. \nWhy attend?\nThis ‘Future Combat Air and Space (FCAS) Capabilities Summit’ brings together UK defence leaders\, its allies\, and industrial partners\, to assess the strategic direction for air and space combat capabilities now and in the future. \nA comprehensive agenda will review the next generation of combat\, intelligence\, surveillance\, reconnaissance and mobility aircraft\, and assess how these will be integrated into existing fleets and weapon systems\, maintain interoperability across alliances and improve operational resilience and effectiveness of European air forces. There will be interactive discussions on the role and capabilities of unmanned combat aerial vehicles and new rotary-wing platforms to deliver air supremacy in multi-domain operations\, including on land and maritime scenarios. Our speakers will also prioritise the growing importance of the space domain\, emerging cyber strategies and central role of cross-domain intelligence sharing to execute operations on the modern battlefield. Beyond evaluating technological and tactical approaches\, this conference will tackle how to secure sovereign and allied defence-critical supply chains\, establish on-shore industrial capabilities and leverage new manufacturing innovations. \nWho should attend?\nIf you are operating within air and space defence capabilities this is a unique opportunity to network with senior decision-makers\, budget holders and military leaders\, and be part of a discussion on future programmes with a highly specialised group of defence stakeholders\, right in the centre of London. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n More information

SUMMARY:Airbus pioneers sustainable aviation for an open and environmentally friendly world
DESCRIPTION:By Marc Hamy\, President Corporate Affairs\, Airbus\, fellow of the AAE \nAviation is not only an extremely fast\, safe and efficient means of transport. This is what makes it possible to connect all the countries of the world in less than 24 hours\, to dispersed families to reunite\, to economies to develop and open up to the world\, to different cultures to exchange and better understand each other. It is therefore a means of prosperity\, peace and unity that must be preserved and that is why Airbus is doing everything possible: technological innovations\, sustainable fuels\, increasingly efficient aircraft\, to be the pioneer of carbon-free aviation that allows future generations to continue to fly with the greatest respect for our planet. It is this objective and the means to achieve it\, that Marc Hamy will develop on behalf of Airbus\, during this conference. \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n [image] ©Airbus 2021 – photo by S. DESCRIPTION:By Dr. Patrick Michel\, Director of Research at the CNRS/Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur\, ESA Hera Mission Scientific Manager \nThe DART (NASA) and Hera (ESA) missions are the first fully documented asteroid deflection test based on the kinetic impactor technique\, to verify and potentially validate this technique and numerical simulations of asteroid-scale impacts. The first component\, DART\, successfully performed an impact on the small moon of the double asteroid Didymos changing its trajectory around its main body! What are the challenges\, surprises and uncertainties? How will Hera measure the outcome of this impact and the properties of the asteroid? \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n [image] © Hera probe and its Cubesats

SUMMARY:RISE: on the way to carbon-free aviation!
DESCRIPTION:By Jérôme Bonini \, Senior Vice President\, Research and Technology\, Safran Aircraft Engines \nReducing engine consumption remains a major element in the future of aeronautics. Although much progress has been made over the past 50 years\, technological breakthroughs associated with the use of renewable fuels must be considered in the next 10 years in order to meet the net-0 CO2 challenge in 2050. \nThis is the challenge of the RISE initiative launched in 2021 by Safran and GE\, whose ambition is to develop technologies to reduce the CO2 emissions of the next CFM engine by 20% by 2030-2035. \n\nFor reasons beyond our control this conference can not take place face-to-face at the J. Cabanis media library\, Toulouse\, but will take place remotely \n\n \n Join the conference remotly\n \n \n\nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\nImage credit: © Safran Aircraft Engines

SUMMARY:The Viability of e-VTOL for urban traffic
DESCRIPTION:By André BORD\, Honorary Member of the Air and Space Academy \nThis presentation analyses the design characteristics and performances of electrically powered aircraft \, aimed at the urban passenger transport market \, which could significantly reduce both the urban traffic congestion and its associated pollution. \nThe specification for these aircraft are based upon the Uber Elevate White Paper (2016) \, complemented by a more detailed review of operational and system aspects. Two possible practical operational implementations are considered \, either an airborne “metro” or a classical airborne taxi. A comprehensive review of a selection of existing projects reveals the multitude of options and indicates a wide range of performances difficult to understand for vehicles supposedly aimed at the same specification . The identification of the state of the art and development perspective of the main components of the propulsion chain and of the “glider” are then presented. This enables a selection of a preferred configuration based upon the tandem wings concept which is presented with some details \, and its preliminary performance assessment and a comparison with the targeted specification requirements and the published data. \nThe technical risks associated with the full size development of these vehicles are then reviewed. The main one is the safety aspect which is under the control of the certification agencies (EASA\,NASA \,CAAC \, ….) which have published independent requirements \, in particular the EASA “Special Condition VTOL Aircraft” \, July 2019 \, which is commented. Numerous points of concern are identified \, in particular the management of the propulsion system failure and the precautions necessary to prevent or mitigate battery fire. Another major point is the acoustic nuisance which deserved a specific analysis \, defining demanding target noise levels to enable public acceptance and reviewing the noise characteristics of distributed propulsion systems.\nIt is concluded that with the current battery technology performances \, e-VTOL can just meet the Uber specification requirements \, but major issues such as acoustic nuisances \, costs of operation and development of the infrastructures deserve further analysis. \n\nFree registration required \n(subject to availability) \nOops! SUMMARY:Security in space: a societal challenge of the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:By Gal. Jean-Daniel Testé\, former Joint Space Commander\, France Director of AEROSPACELAB\, AAE correspondent. \nIn a world where space risks and threats (debris proliferation\, anti-satellite weapons experimentation\, unfriendly actions in space) are steadily increasing\, accurate knowledge of space activities is today a great challenge for space nations around the world. France and Europe must play a central role in guaranteeing their freedom of access to space\, their freedom to use orbits and the security of their space assets\, which are essential today to the economy\, society and all European citizens. \n\n Image credit: ©D.R.
