SUMMARY:In search of a second genesis of life: beyond Earth and Mars\, to exoplanets
DESCRIPTION:By Frances Westall\, geologist\, astrobiologist\, director of the exobiology group of the Centre for Molecular Biology in Orleans\, president of the European Association of Astrobiology. \nHas life appeared on Earth only\, or is it a “cosmic phenomenon”\, as thinks the Nobel laureate\, Christian de Duve ? Can it appear everywhere or are there certain constraints? Indeed\, while the ingredients of life – organic molecules\, water\, energy – are generally available\, the geological context must still be relevant\, i.e. a rocky planet with hydrothermal activity in a context Volcanic. Such conditions for the emergence of ex novo life existed on several planets in the young Solar System (Earth\, Mars\, perhaps Venus and even now icy satellites\, such as Europe or Enceladus)\, but are no longer present\, even on the Earth. However\, the high number of suitable planets in the Universe suggests that life may be widespread\, in a rather primitive form\, such as anoxygenic microorganisms\, the problem being rather how to identify them on an exoplanet. \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nRegister by June 28\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:Dynamics of natural and agricultural landscapes: Contribution of Sentinel time series of images
DESCRIPTION:By Prof. Laurence Hubert-Moy\, member of the Scientific Programmes Committee (SPC) of CNES\, University of Rennes\, AAE correspondent \nDeforestation\, urbanization\, drainage and cultivation of wet grasslands\, melting glaciers\, advances in deserts… are all changes that are happening all over the world. In the context of climate change\, monitoring these landscape dynamics is an important challenge in terms of the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity. Intra- and interannual landscape dynamics can be observed using the Sentinel-1 and 2 satellite time series. The contribution of this data will be illustrated by several examples of application in natural and agricultural landscapes. \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nSign up by May 24\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:CSG: a French\, European\, Guyanese space centre
DESCRIPTION:By Bernard Chemoul\, General Inspector\, CNES. \nThe Guiana Space Centre was the result of the national political will in the mid-1960s to endow France with an autonomous space policy. With its exceptional location\, the CSG is the spaceport of Europe\, an essential asset of the European Space Agency and the flight base of all European launchers. The CSG emblematic of the success of European technology is also located in a territory facing great structural difficulties\, and its presence illuminates the delays of Guyana without being able to fill them… \nThe conference will be held by video conference. \nRegister by April 26\, 2021 to receive login information on the day of the conference \n\nOops! SUMMARY:55th 3AF International Conference AERO2020+1
DESCRIPTION:The 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics is an annual event organised by the French Aeronautics and Aerospace Society (3AF) at French venues known for their activity in the field of aeronautics and/or aerospace technology. \nThe Conference is an excellent opportunity for scientific exchange between scientists from industry\, research institutions and academia. Scientists and engineers from other fluid mechanics fields are also welcome. \nEach year the Conference addresses a different topic in the field of aerodynamics. It is organised on the basis of five halfdays of technical presentations\, each introduced by a keynote conference given by a recognised expert. The Conference is concluded by a technical visit in connection with the conference subject. \nIn 2021\, the Conference will be hosted by the Pprime Institute (CNRS\, ISAE-ENSMA\, University of Poitiers) in Poitiers. This 55th 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics (AERO2020+1) focuses on Turbulent flows in Aerodynamic Applications. \nTurbulent flow regimes\, compressible or otherwise\, are omnipresent in high-Reynolds-number aerodynamic systems. Accurate prediction is required to anticipate and optimise the performance of new concepts. Optimisation is particularly important where the reduction of chemical and noise pollution is concerned. Robustness and safety for real weather and varying environmental conditions are also critical for aeronautical/terrestrial transportation and for renewable energy industries. These constraints have driven significant progress in the academic and industrial communities in recent years\, for instance in the fields of Hybrid\, Large-Eddy simulation and Lattice-Boltzmann approaches for the modelling and analysis of unsteady industrial flows; or in the development of measurement methodologies that are now frequently used in the context of data-driven modelling. New theoretical frameworks have appeared for the description of out-of-equilibrium turbulence\, and for the reduction and modelling of coherent structures and their sound radiation. These frameworks provide a foundation for the development of flow-control strategies. The prediction of transition to turbulence in complex flows\, particularly important in the aeronautical sector\, is also an active domain. \nMore information : www.3af-aerodynamics2020.com

SUMMARY:Moving from cyber-security towards cyber-resilience in aviation
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Patrick Mana\, Cyber-security Program Manager\, EATM-CERT Manager at EUROCONTROL \nThe cyber threats to aviation take numerous forms: state-sponsored attacks\, cyber-crime\, hacktivists. The scale of the threat means it is no longer truly possible to be completely cyber-secure. The real goal should be “cyber-resilience\,” focusing both on defending against attacks and quickly reacting should such an attack succeed. We have to recognise that cyber-attacks are and will successfully hit aviation. Taking this viewpoint could help ensure that attacks create less significant interruptions to services for shorter periods of time. \n \n\nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Space surveillance: sovereignty and protection
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Anne-Marie Mainguy\, president of AIr and Space Academy\, high counsellor at ONERA\n\n\nSpace surveillance has two different reasons for existing one to meet the specific needs of the military (sovereignty)\, the other more general to avoid collisions (protection). The first need appeared immediately to the Americans and the Russians\, which led to the establishment of catalogs\, the second is the consequence of the increase of satellites and debris in orbit. The catalogues\, established by the means of detections\, allow to evaluate situations\, improved by prosecution\, it is possible to identify or launch the evasive maneuvers. SUMMARY:Rafale: programme and innovations
DESCRIPTION:Photographs and recordings will not be allowed \nLecture presented by Jean-Claude Hironde\, former deputy technical director of Dassault Aviation\, technical director of the Rafale\, member of the Air and Space Academy. \nThe Rafale programme\, spearhead of French national Defence\, will be presented in its complete cycle\, from upstream studies to delivery to the French Navy and Air Force. The specifications of the Rafale programme are very ambitious: the new aircraft alone must replace six different aircraft\, currently in service in the French Army. It was necessary to imagine a new configuration capable of satisfying all the specifics of the Naval and Air specifics. Interception and close combat missions\, which require great agility and high Mach flights\, have led to the optimization of revolutionary air intakes. Now widely deployed in operational theatres\, the Rafale has shown its efficiency and reliability in combat\, demonstrating its technological maturity and export capability. \nFree admission in the limit of available seats. \n\nIn partnership with:

SUMMARY:Towards unmanned ships and aircraft?
DESCRIPTION:Objectives of the conference\nSpectacular\, enduring progress in information and communication technologies is fuelling the design of largely autonomous moving objects. In the area of transport\, many prototypes exist for vehicles with a certain autonomy\, and their numbers are growing. Aircraft and ships have not escaped this trend\, which has already brought clear benefits in specific areas. Work on standardisation in both sectors aims to supervise the digitisation\, transmission and processing of information\, as well as its presentation to crews. \nAre we moving towards a world where transport ships and aircraft will have no crews\, or reduced crews? \nThe Académie de l’air et de l’espace and the Académie de marine have decided to join forces to study this issue\, which presents many aspects common to both environments\, certainly more so than with any other mode of transport. The purpose of this conference\, which will last a day and a half\, is to explore the various facets of automation and autonomy by comparing and contrasting maritime and aeronautical contexts\, including environmental aspects; it will also aim to assess the maturity of the respective concepts and sets of norms. \nAfter a presentation of technological perspectives\, the expectations of both operators and manufacturers will be explored in a round table aimed at bringing out common trends. The second day will open with a session devoted to safety goals and associated regulatory and normative frameworks which will need to evolve significantly for advanced automation. Specific focus will be placed on methods for designing and validating information and communication systems which\, at the heart of automation\, raise particularly complex safety and security issues. The second day will continue with a round table putting people at the centre of the process by tackling employment\, training and social acceptability\, in a debate involving specialists as well as onboard and ground users. Legal issues\, including liability and insurance\, will be considered at the end of the day. \nThe conference is directed at all maritime and air transport professionals: research and industry\, crews\, operators and administrations\, especially those providing navigation services. The military should also be interested since they will be using certain automated resources and will need to cohabit with civilians in their respective environments. Finally\, specialised students should find useful insights for their studies and future professional life. \nThis conference will be introduced then concluded by two keynote speakers and will provide participants with an opportunity for in-depth exchanges.

SUMMARY:Nanosatellites conquering space
DESCRIPTION:by Michel Courtois\, former director of ESTEC\, ESA technical centre\, former technical director of Alcatel Space\, member of AAE\, space systems engineering consultant \nThe creation of the CubeSat standard in 2000 by California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) and Stanford University\, thanks to strong support from the US government\, paved the way for a strong miniaturisation of electronics\, the use of non-space components and the establishment of a new approach for realising space systems. These satellites\, weighing between 1 and 30 kg\, can respond to scientific missions\, technological demonstrations in orbit\, or application missions. First developed in a university setting in 2013\, new actors have appropriated this concept with the ambition of making space more accessible. Several hundred satellites are due to be launched in the next five years. Projects are being developed for satellite constellations\, new manufacturers have appeared (Clyde Space\, Gomspace…)\, as have future operators (Spire\, Planet Lab…). Creating a wind of freshness and incredible enthusiasm\, this veritable explosion of projects nonetheless raises certain problems. A new El Dorado so to speak\, with its associated pitfalls… \nFree admission in the limit of available seats. \n\nIn partnership with:

SUMMARY:Sustainability of operations in orbit: Space\, a rubbish bin? If only!!
DESCRIPTION:Space players are often blamed for having turned Space into a rubbish bin. Into a dump\, maybe (this is debatable)\, but definitely not a rubbish bin! Because a rubbish bin is an advanced instrument of waste management\, involving many players. Managing waste is the responsibility of all members of Homo sapiens\, from their unnatural actions. \nAfter a quick overview of the situation and a reminder of the kind of events feared\, Christophe Bonnal will focus on describing the actions that are taken at the international level and how well they are complied with today. \n\nBy Christophe BONNAL\, AAE correspondent\, Senior Expert at CNES\, Chairman \,Space Debris Committee – IAA (International Academy of Astronautics)\n\n  \nWe cannot focus on responsible management of space debris alone\, we must also take the opportunity to ask ourselves why it is there … and therefore what is the final goal of Space activities! \n\nBy Jacques ARNOULD\, éthics expert at CNES \n\n\nFree admission in the limit of available seats

SUMMARY:A400M Military Transport Aircraft Programme
DESCRIPTION:For a long time the A400 was considered a problem at Airbus. Deadlines could not be met due to technical hurdles and the rising cost of the project kept the A400M in the headlines for a long time. Originally planned as a traditional military transport aircraft\, requirements increased over the years. With regard to comparable aircraft types\, payload and range had to double. Today\, the complex project includes parachute and load capabilities\, air refuelling and unpaved runway operations. The A400M thus became a mammoth project\, requiring cutting edge technology. In the meantime\, it proved itself in military and humanitarian operations following natural disasters. \nAt this round table\, four presentations and a panel discussion will show what the A400M can do\, what challenges the development teams had to master\, what was really behind the headlines in the media\, and what services the A400M can provide now and in the future. Representatives from the A400M Chief Engineering and Flight Testing departments at Airbus will provide insights into the design\, development and testing\, and the German Air Force will report on its introduction into the air force and operational experience. Come and meet us in Bremen\, discover the flight test phase and technical developments and find out what is really behind the A400M. \nFree admission \n\nProgramme:\n17:00 – Welcome by Daniel Reckzeh\, Airbus Bremen and DGLR Section L2 “Manned Aircraft” \n17:10 – “Design of the A400M”\, by Ulrich Fischer\, A400M Chief Engineering\, Airbus Bremen \n17:45 –“Evolution of the A400M capabilities”\, byMartin Dechow\, A400M Chief Engineering\, Airbus Bremen \n18:20 – “Highlights of the A400M flight test phase”\, byKarl-Heinz Mai\, Airbus Flight Test\, Toulouse \n18:55 –“A400M in-service experience”\, Group Captain Ludger Bette\, Commodore of the Air Transport Squadron of the German Airforce \n19:30 – Roundtable anddiscussion\, moderated by Daniel Reckzeh \n\nIn partnership with: \n \n\nRegistration are closed

SUMMARY:Peer Support – Managing the Expectations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Flight Captain Hans RAHMANN\, Former Lufthansa Pilot\, Director MayDay Foundation \nIncreased technology has meant that the role of pilots has changed and might be thought to be easier and less stressful\, but in many areas this is certainly not the case which can lead to abnormalities in a pilot’s behaviour and performance directly affecting flight safety. A requirement for a safe operation is a sympathetic management and an understanding/supportive relationship between crew members so any changes in behaviour/personal feelings may be discussed and highlighted if necessary\, perhaps also involving families. \nHans Rahmann will describe how his MayDay foundation is furthering this cause by working to boost the long running Peer Support Programmes in his lecture as follows: \nWhere Control is fair and Trust is just \n\nResults of the Task Force after the German Wings Accident in 2015 led to new EASA Regulations.\nThese have to be implemented until August 2020.\nOne of their main focusses is based on Peer Support Programmes (PSPs).\nEPPSI (European Pilot Peer Support Initiative)\, being part of the advisory body\, supported EASA with expertise from running PSPs for 25+ years.\nThe expectations of the public and the industry need a realistic consideration:\n\nWhat are prerequisites of PSPs\, what is life like\, what can be achieved and how?\nWhat is wishful thinking\, where are limits?

SUMMARY:From the origin of the Universe to the origin of life
DESCRIPTION:Due to the speaker’s unavailability\, the conference scheduled for this date on “The Sun Our Star: Threats and Promises” is postponed and replaced by this conference. \nPresented by Sylvie Vauclair\, professor emeritus at the University of Toulouse\, honorary member of the University Institute of France\, astrophysicist at the Institute for Research in Astrophysics and Planetology (IRAP\, Observatory Midi-Pyrenees)\, member of the Air and Space Academy. \nWhen we told the story of Man\, we reasoned in terms of centuries or millennia. The history of Universe is recounted in billions of years. But\, even more than this temporal vertigo\, it is the appearance of the living that fascinates scientists\, the transition of raw matter to the organized being able to reproduce and adapt to its environment. This is the mystery that Sylvie Vauclair tries to capture here\, by synthesising the great results of cosmology and those relating to the emergence of life\, to understand how time\, space and complexity weave the fabric of the history of matter\, even if she thought. We are much more than “stardust”! We are very complex and gifted beings of reason\, but also condemned to the ephemeral. “Breathing\, breathing\, active punctuation – a comma in space-time. \nOn this occasion\, the Renaissance Bookstore\, which will be present\, will offer you the book “De l’origine de l’Univers à l’origine de la vie” and will set up a book of signings of Mrs Sylvie Vauclair for those who wish.\nFree admission in the limit of available seats. \n\nIn partnership with: \n \nImage credit: MPIA/NASA/Calar Alto Observatory

Now widely deployed in operational theatres\, the Rafale has shown its efficiency and reliability in combat\, demonstrating its technological maturity and export capability. \nThe conference will take place in two parts: \n\n\n\n6pm-7pm: Presentation\n7pm-8pm: Questions/Answers\n\n\n\n  \n Free entry\, obligatory registration \nRegistrations are closed. no more places available. \n\nIn partnership with: \n \nAQUI-IHEDN and the Mollat Bookstore join this cycle of conferences.

SUMMARY:Planetary Exploration\, Horizon 2061
DESCRIPTION:Why Horizon 2061?\n\n2061 will be the centennial of the first human space flight and of President Kennedy’s Moon address to Congress\n2061 will see the return of comet P/Halley in the inner solar system\, reminding us of the international fleet of spacecraft which flew by it in 1986 !\n\nThus\, 2061 is a symbolic date choice which allows us to connect robotic and manned exploration  in the same\, single perspective ! \n“Planetary Exploration\, Horizon 2061” is a long-term foresight exercise initially proposed by the Air and Space Academy and led by scientists\, engineers and technology experts heavily involved in planetary sciences and in the space exploration of the Solar System. Its ultimate objective is to draw up to the 2061 horizon a long-term picture of the four pillars of planetary exploration: \n\nour major scientific questions on planetary systems;\nthe different types of space missions that we need to fly to address these questions;\nthe key technologies we need to master to make these missions flyable;\nthe ground-based and space-based infrastructures needed in support to these missions.\n\nThe year 2061 symbolically represents our intention to encompass both robotic and human exploration in the same perspective. Its distant horizon\, located well beyond the usual horizons of the planning exercises of space agencies\, avoids any possible confusion with them and is intended to “free the imaginations” : imaginations of planetary scientists\, who are invited to formulate what they think are the most relevant and important scientific questions independently of the a priori technical possibility of answering them ;  imaginations of engineers and technology experts\, who are invited to contribute to the exercise by looking for innovative technical solutions that will make it possible to fly the challenging space missions that will allow us to address these questions. \nFour main objectives can be reached via this dialogue between scientists and engineers: \n\nIdentify the technologies and infrastructures that will be needed to address our major scientific questions;\nprovide a broad spectrum of national space missions of diverse sizes and complexity levels all contributing to address these questions;\ninspire coordination and collaborations between the different players of planetary exploration to better meet technology challenges and fly these missions;\nshare with the public and public/private leaders the major scientific questions and technological challenges of planetary exploration.\n\nThe “Horizon 2061” exercise involves three successive steps designed to progressively build the three pillars. Its third step\, the “Horizon 2061 synthesis workshop“\, will be hosted by IAS in Toulouse from September 11th to 13th\, 2019. Its tentative conclusions will be presented for discussion at the joint EPSC-DPS meeting in Geneva (September 15th to 20th\, 2019)\, and later for discussion and final approval at the COSPAR General Assembly (Sydney\, August 15th to 23rd\, 2020). \n\n\n\nMore information on : www.horizon2061.cnrs.fr
