DESCRIPTION:Small satellites and cubesats have grown in popularity over the last decade as effective tools for space research and technology demonstrations for a variety of applications. The cubesat approach to space missions combined with recent advances in cubesat technologies offer innovative cost-effective and fast turn-around solutions for addressing fundamental scientific questions in Earth remote sensing\, space weather studies\, Sun-Earth interactions and planetary explorations. SUMMARY:SWOT\, monitoring water resources\, oceans and climate
DESCRIPTION:As part of the 2024 “Rendez-vous Espace” conference cycle organised by the Friends of the Cité de l’espace in partnership with the Cité de l’espace\, the Académie de l’air et de l’espace and the 3AF.\n           \nLecture presented by Delphine Leroux\, head of the Hydrology\, Cryosphere and Water Cycle programs at CNES and Rosemary Morrow\, oceanographer and CNES Project Scientist for the Jason altimetry missions (2009-2012) and for the SWOT altimetry-interferometry mission (since 2009). \nSWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography)\, the joint NASA/CNES high-resolution oceanography and hydrology satellite mission\, is conducting the world’s first study of inland waters and the evolution of oceans and coastal waters. \nIt measures the rise of freshwater masses on Earth and saltwater in the ocean\, in order to quantify and understand the role of the ocean in climate change\, how global warming affects the global water cycle\, the storage and redistribution of water in lakes\, rivers and reservoirs\, and flood monitoring. SUMMARY:SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels): potential and limitations of a key solution for the decarbonisation of aviation
DESCRIPTION:By Nicolas Jeuland\, Emeritus Expert on the Environmental Impact of Aviation and Future Fuels\, Safran\, AAE correspondent (lecture in french) \nThe aviation industry is committed to carbon neutrality by 2050. To achieve this\, the aviation industry is working on 3 main levers: the constant improvement of the fleet’s energy efficiency\, in particular through the development of ultra-efficient aircraft\, the optimization of operations (in flight\, but also on the ground) and the substitution of fossil fuels by low-carbon solutions. In the latter category\, SAFs (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) or CADs (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) have a crucial role to play as they enable an immediate decarbonisation of existing and future fleets. This conference aims to take stock of these fuels (types\, resources used\, production processes). In particular\, the development will be discussed\, highlighting the potential of these sectors\, but also their limits (availability of the resource\, cost).
