SUMMARY:A400M Military Transport Aircraft Programme
DESCRIPTION:For a long time the A400 was considered a problem at Airbus. Deadlines could not be met due to technical hurdles and the rising cost of the project kept the A400M in the headlines for a long time. Originally planned as a traditional military transport aircraft\, requirements increased over the years. With regard to comparable aircraft types\, payload and range had to double. Today\, the complex project includes parachute and load capabilities\, air refuelling and unpaved runway operations. The A400M thus became a mammoth project\, requiring cutting edge technology. DESCRIPTION:Lecture cancelled\nTheir real story : a longer and different history than what is known.\nLecture by Pascal Bultel\,  Expert at CNES\, former airline world engineer and historian. \nSPACEX performed a number of premiers since 2015 : first recovery of a commercial reusable launcher\, first recovery at sea\, first reflight\, first flight of a multi reusable booster vehicle. This sheds light on advanced space launchers more than ever before and pushes to think that reusability is a pretty recent event. Which is far from the truth. Which is far from the truth. \nAdvanced means to reach space were imagined way before the Space Shuttle performed its maiden flight in 1981. Isaac Newton himself open the field when publishing Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica in 1687. The book contains the first scientific description of what earth orbit is and how reaching it with a reusable mean. Some two centuries later Konstantin Tsiolkovski was on the same line\, working on reusable aerospace concepts. When finally becoming reality in the late 1950s / early 1960s space travel soon produced a large number of reusable concepts that took decades to mature. The most popular is the FALCON 9 which relies on roots firmly established by Philip Bono\, a Douglas Corp. engineer as soon as 1959. \nThe presentation will describe how advanced launchers and suborbital vehicles evolved over a three century period. This large overview will give participants the necessary keys to understand present and futures development efforts.

In December 2018\, France launched the first satellite of the CSO component\, the first in a series of three\, offering exceptional optical observation capabilities. The same can be said for communications systems. European cooperative initiatives are becoming more and more precise\, enabling information to be exchanged and means supplemented (Germany\, Belgium\, Sweden\, Italy…). \nPresident Trump has decided to create a sixth branch of the U.S. Army in charge of coordinating American space activities; China is asserting its political position and in parallel proceeding to many launches. This shows how essential the space component has become in our operational systems. \nBut in space these structures are vulnerable to many threats: recent incidents have demonstrated this through attempts at intimidation\, forcing our government to take very firm positions. In situ-propellant production of CH4/O2 and H2O on the Martian surface is used to reduce return propellant and surface consumable requirements\, and thus total mission mass and cost. Chemical combustion powered ground vehicles are employed to afford the surface mission with the high degree of mobility required for an effective exploration program. \nData is presented showing why medium-energy conjunction class trajectories are optimal for piloted missions\, and mission analysis is given showing what technologies are optimal for each of the missions primary maneuvers. The optimal crew size and composition for initial piloted Mars missions is presented\, along with a proposed surface systems payload manifest. The back-up plans and abort philosophy of the mission plans are described. An end to end point design for the Mars Direct mission using a Saturn V-equivalent launch vehicle is presented and options for further evolution of the point design are discussed. It is concluded that the Mars Direct plans offers a viable option for robust piloted Mars missions employing near-term technology capable of creating a sustained human presence on the Red Planet. The great discoveries of the US-European mission Cassini-Huygens\, which explored Saturn and its procession of satellites for 13 years (2004-2017)\, then preparations for the European mission juice\, developing for the exploration of satellites of Jupiter and its satellites Galilean from 2030 – launch programmed in 2022-will be presented. \nCassini-Huygens’s great discoveries at Saturn and Titan\nby Jean-Pierre LEBRETON\, former head of the Huygens mission at ESA\, associate researcher\, CNRS-Université d’orléans-LPC2E\, member of the EFA \nThe American-European mission (NASA/ESA) Cassini-Huygens was launched in October 1997 from Florida by the Titan IV rocket. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft began orbiting after 7 years of travel around Saturn on 1 July 2004. Huygens landed on the surface of Titan on January 14\, 2005. The exploration of Saturn and its natural satellites\, in particular Titan and Enceladus\, lasted 13 years. In order to preserve the future exploration of Titan and Enceladus\, two moons with an ocean of liquid water under their ice surface\, Cassini was precipitated at the end of the mission in the atmosphere of Saturn where he disintegrated on September 15\, 2017 during the “Grand finale”. \nExploration of Jupiter; The Juice mission\nby Olivier WITASSE\, Head of the Juice Project at ESA/Estec \nThe European Juice Mission (for JUpiter ICy Moon Explorer)\, selected in 2012\, is currently in the development phase for a launch scheduled for May 2022 from Kourou.
