SUMMARY:AAE Workshop: Towards new European military helicopter programmes
DESCRIPTION:A forum entitled “Towards New European Military Helicopter Programs”\, organized by the Air and Space Academy\, was held in Paris on June 15\, 2022\, during the Eurosatory Exhibition. \nThis forum confirmed that it is time to prepare the next generation of rotorcraft\, the key points are to define a common set of capability requirements at the European level including UK\, based on a real political will from the member States. The fact that companies are willing to cooperate together is a very positive point. The work continued between the companies and the members of the Academy and led to the establishment of recommendations addressed to all the actors of a military rotorcraft program to be developed in cooperation. \nIt is at this stage that we invite you to participate in a presentation\, September 4\, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm\, in advance of the 49th European Rotorcraft Forum (ERF2023). . During this meeting\, the members of the Academy and of the companies will present their work: recommendations and best practices to achieve a coherent program to reach a high-performance\, flexible rotorcraft platform that meets the needs of armed forces. A second part will allow us to collect your questions and comments. \n\nRegistrations are closed. \n\n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Go to ERF2023 Programme\n \n Go to ERF2023 registration

SUMMARY:Electric aircraft: the future of urban mobility?
DESCRIPTION:By Alain Cassier\, President of the Program Committee of the UAM by e-VTOL conference\, fellow of the AAE \nMany multi-rotor electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) projects are emerging and target the urban air taxi and urban aeromobility (UAM= Urban Air Mobility) markets. They give hope that everyone will soon be able to move around the city by flying over traffic jams without generating environmental nuisance thanks to electric motorization. Even though some of these projects are reaching the flight test stage and appear close to commissioning\, there are still hurdles to overcome to make this dream a reality. It is therefore proposed to study the conditions under which an urban air transport service could be rapidly deployed. \n\n\n Free admission (subject to availability).\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n[image] ©AAE

SUMMARY:Aviation was born with petrol: now what?
DESCRIPTION:By Xavier Bouis\, President of the Energy and Environment Commission of the Air and Space Academy (C2E) \nSince 1800\, fossil energy and its use in machines have gradually freed us from the “survival” mode that our ancestors knew… Agriculture\, medicine\, housing\, transport\, industry\, leisure\, free time… The unthinkable is there\, accessible to many if not all! How does travel\, air transport\, like all other sectors\, prepare to continue without this manna that endangers the planet? Technical solutions\, societal changes\, time is running out to act. \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n [image] ©Hans de Pixabay

SUMMARY:Airbus pioneers sustainable aviation for an open and environmentally friendly world
DESCRIPTION:By Marc Hamy\, President Corporate Affairs\, Airbus\, fellow of the AAE \nAviation is not only an extremely fast\, safe and efficient means of transport. This is what makes it possible to connect all the countries of the world in less than 24 hours\, to dispersed families to reunite\, to economies to develop and open up to the world\, to different cultures to exchange and better understand each other. It is therefore a means of prosperity\, peace and unity that must be preserved and that is why Airbus is doing everything possible: technological innovations\, sustainable fuels\, increasingly efficient aircraft\, to be the pioneer of carbon-free aviation that allows future generations to continue to fly with the greatest respect for our planet. It is this objective and the means to achieve it\, that Marc Hamy will develop on behalf of Airbus\, during this conference. \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n [image] ©Airbus 2021 – photo by S. SUMMARY:ARTEMIS programme: A European astronaut soon on the Moon?
DESCRIPTION:By Jean Blouvac \, Head of the Exploration and Human Spaceflight Program\, CNES \nAt the November 2022 Ministerial Conference\, ESA Member States confirmed their involvement in human exploration and flight through the Terrae Nova programme. A few days before the launch of the ARTEMIS I mission was successfully carried out allowing the first mission of the Orion spacecraft with the European Service Module. Last June\, France was the 20th country to sign the ARTEMIS agreements. And now what will happen? Will we soon see a European astronaut on the Moon? \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n [image] ©D.R.

SUMMARY:First asteroid deflection test with DART and HERA missions
DESCRIPTION:By Dr. Patrick Michel\, Director of Research at the CNRS/Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur\, ESA Hera Mission Scientific Manager \nThe DART (NASA) and Hera (ESA) missions are the first fully documented asteroid deflection test based on the kinetic impactor technique\, to verify and potentially validate this technique and numerical simulations of asteroid-scale impacts. The first component\, DART\, successfully performed an impact on the small moon of the double asteroid Didymos changing its trajectory around its main body! What are the challenges\, surprises and uncertainties? How will Hera measure the outcome of this impact and the properties of the asteroid? \n\n\n Free admission in the limit of available seats.\n \n\n In partnership with:\n \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n [image] © Hera probe and its Cubesats

SUMMARY:RISE: on the way to carbon-free aviation!
DESCRIPTION:By Jérôme Bonini \, Senior Vice President\, Research and Technology\, Safran Aircraft Engines \nReducing engine consumption remains a major element in the future of aeronautics. Although much progress has been made over the past 50 years\, technological breakthroughs associated with the use of renewable fuels must be considered in the next 10 years in order to meet the net-0 CO2 challenge in 2050. \nThis is the challenge of the RISE initiative launched in 2021 by Safran and GE\, whose ambition is to develop technologies to reduce the CO2 emissions of the next CFM engine by 20% by 2030-2035. \n\nFor reasons beyond our control this conference can not take place face-to-face at the J. Cabanis media library\, Toulouse\, but will take place remotely \n\n \n Join the conference remotly\n \n \n\nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n\n\n\nImage credit: © Safran Aircraft Engines

SUMMARY:The Viability of e-VTOL for urban traffic
DESCRIPTION:By André BORD\, Honorary Member of the Air and Space Academy \nThis presentation analyses the design characteristics and performances of electrically powered aircraft \, aimed at the urban passenger transport market \, which could significantly reduce both the urban traffic congestion and its associated pollution. \nThe specification for these aircraft are based upon the Uber Elevate White Paper (2016) \, complemented by a more detailed review of operational and system aspects. Two possible practical operational implementations are considered \, either an airborne “metro” or a classical airborne taxi. A comprehensive review of a selection of existing projects reveals the multitude of options and indicates a wide range of performances difficult to understand for vehicles supposedly aimed at the same specification . The identification of the state of the art and development perspective of the main components of the propulsion chain and of the “glider” are then presented. This enables a selection of a preferred configuration based upon the tandem wings concept which is presented with some details \, and its preliminary performance assessment and a comparison with the targeted specification requirements and the published data. \nThe technical risks associated with the full size development of these vehicles are then reviewed. The main one is the safety aspect which is under the control of the certification agencies (EASA\,NASA \,CAAC \, ….) which have published independent requirements \, in particular the EASA “Special Condition VTOL Aircraft” \, July 2019 \, which is commented. Numerous points of concern are identified \, in particular the management of the propulsion system failure and the precautions necessary to prevent or mitigate battery fire. Another major point is the acoustic nuisance which deserved a specific analysis \, defining demanding target noise levels to enable public acceptance and reviewing the noise characteristics of distributed propulsion systems.\nIt is concluded that with the current battery technology performances \, e-VTOL can just meet the Uber specification requirements \, but major issues such as acoustic nuisances \, costs of operation and development of the infrastructures deserve further analysis. \n\nFree registration required \n(subject to availability) \nOops! SUMMARY:Security in space: a societal challenge of the 21st century
DESCRIPTION:By Gal. Jean-Daniel Testé\, former Joint Space Commander\, France Director of AEROSPACELAB\, AAE correspondent. \nIn a world where space risks and threats (debris proliferation\, anti-satellite weapons experimentation\, unfriendly actions in space) are steadily increasing\, accurate knowledge of space activities is today a great challenge for space nations around the world. France and Europe must play a central role in guaranteeing their freedom of access to space\, their freedom to use orbits and the security of their space assets\, which are essential today to the economy\, society and all European citizens. \n\n Image credit: ©D.R. SUMMARY:Mars\, in search of life!
DESCRIPTION:By Sylvestre Maurice\, astrophysicist at IRAP\, specialist in Martian exploration\, correspondent of the AAE. \nThese are great times! To date\, 12 vehicles are operational around Mars or on its surface. A trophy of national supremacy\, a field of technological experimentation\, a source of wonder for the people who fervently follow this adventure\, the exploration of the red planet represents the most beautiful quest for scientists who methodically seek if the Martians have existed… They are preparing the next step: the collection of samples that will be brought back to Earth within 10 years\, while waiting in the longer term\, the ultimate challenge: a manned flight to Mars. \nImage credit: ©NASAJPL-CaltechASUMSSS-Perseverance Selfie \n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe cycle of conferences “D’Air et d’Espace” 2022 resumes from April only in person \n\n\nIn partnership with:

SUMMARY:Decarbonizing Regional Aviation: An Incremental Approach
DESCRIPTION:By Stéphane Viala\, Senior Vice President Engineering\, Head of Design Organization\, ATR \nATR (Regional Transport Aircraft) is the world leader in the regional turboprop segment. ATR created in 1981 to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2021. Since its creation\, the ATR has relied on a low carbon footprint by implementing a policy of incremental evolution of the product and its services. With a consumption of 40% lower than regional jets and -20% compared to other turboprops in the regional market\, ATR has been able to evolve its engines\, avionics and systems while innovating and remaining at the forefront of technology. Minimizing the carbon footprint of our products as well as the impact of our business has always been in our DNA. That is why in this presentation we will share our vision of the future of regional aviation and ATR’s contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of aeronautics through an incremental and realistic approach. \nImage credit:© ATR \n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe cycle of conferences “D’Air et d’Espace” 2022 resumes from April only in person \n\n \n\n In partnership with:

SUMMARY:Light on the dark side of the Universe
DESCRIPTION:By Peter von Ballmoos\, astrophysicist\, teacher-researcher at the University of Toulouse\, IRAP. \nDark matter\, dark energy\, inflation\, baryonic asymmetry are today essential hypotheses to explain the Universe we observe. While the very nature of these hypotheses remains stubbornly obscure\, their mathematical formalism manages to model the observations with a very high degree of precision. This paradox reminds us of the situation in which astronomy found itself until Kepler’s time: the modeling of epicycles was successfully used to describe the apparent motion of planets. And the same question we have been asking ever since: is “saving phenomena” enough? \nImage credit: © R.R \n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe cycle of conferences “D’Air et d’Espace” 2022 resumes from April only in person \n\n\n\n In partnership with:

SUMMARY:The challenges of propulsion of the rotary wing aircraft of the future
DESCRIPTION:By Pascal Dauriac\, Head of R&T and Future Programs\, Safran Helicopter Engines. \nThe helicopter\, like all air transport\, is emerging from an unprecedented crisis caused by COVID19\, despite very specific types of use. If it did not go through this period in the same way as commercial aviation\, it shares with it the same ambition in terms of reducing its environmental footprint and permanently seeking safety. And in a context of strong competition\, the challenges of propulsion are numerous: What future for thermal formulas? What place for electrification\, new fuels? How to combine technological complexity and economic competitiveness? \nWe will have to implement levers that go beyond the scope of design\, exploring the digitalization of manufacturing and maintenance processes and the way of thinking about the service provided to our operators. \nCrédit image : ©Safran Helicopter Engines\n\n\n Free admission (without registration). \n \nThe conference will be accessible remotely. SUMMARY:European Secure Connectivity
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will be done in Spanish \nThis lecture organised by the  Asociación de Ingenieros Aeronáuticos de España (AIAE)\, and the Air and Space Academy\, AAE. \n Presented by\, Antonio Abad\, Chief Technical and Operations Officer at HISPASAT\, member of Air and Space Academy \nDigital highways are the backbone of a modern economy and society. The EU is fast becoming a knowledge driven economy. Many items other than humans will be connected to the Internet. The Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for a high performance connectivity infrastructure. Commercial\, private and public users need to be able to rely on secure and robust services that are protected against cyber and geopolitical threats (data control). \nA secure European telecom and space infrastructure covering the whole territory is an indispensable tool for a more inclusive\, competitive digital economy\,further integrating the European space sector into the larger digital sector. At the same time such an infrastructure will strengthen the independent and sovereign role of Europe in a global world. \nThis lecture addresses the challenges\, risks and opportunities involved. It identifies the gaps and service needs for setting up such a critical European infrastructure. \nRegistration Required :  jornadas@coiae.es

SUMMARY:Why keep going into space? The ethical imperative.
DESCRIPTION:By Jacques Arnould\, ethics expert\, CNES. \nSixty years after the launch of the first Sputnik\, space has entered the NewSpace era. The arrival of new state actors and private entrepreneurs has upset the balance found after the race to the Moon\, the gradual occupation of the Earth’s orbits\, the exploration of the solar system. The promises of space tourism\, the projects to exploit the resources of space arouse interest\, enthusiasm\, but also criticism\, even opposition to the continuation of the space adventure. So many opportunities\, so many reasons to question the purposes of our space activities\, their social\, political\, but also psychological\, even spiritual consequences. Perhaps never has space been so fascinating \nIn partnership with: \n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n  \n  \nImage credit: ©NASA/Shane Kimbrough\, 2021 (2nd spacewalk (EVA) by Thomas Pesquet and Shane Kimbrough during the Alpha mission on June 20\, 2021.) \n\nGiven the evolution of the health crisis\, this conference will take place remotely. SUMMARY:The viability of small electric air vehicles
DESCRIPTION:By André Bord\, former Chief Engineer A320\, Airbus\, former Technical Director ATR\, member of the AAE \nThe use of electric energy sources deemed “green” for the propulsion of air vehicles seems\, for a long time\, reserved for small vehicles meeting the needs of intra-urban transport\, such as air taxis. The analysis of the state of the art and the perspectives of electrical energy storage allows us to evaluate the specific properties\, in particular\, in terms of energy and power. The analysis of the energy and power needs as well as the characteristics of the vehicles that can meet the specifications of these vehicles as well as those of the multiple projects proposed helps to clarify their technical viability\, and their ecological and economic interest.
