SUMMARY:RAeS Future Combat Air and Space Capabilities Summit
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThe increased complexity of modern warfare requires the British Armed Forces\, along with its allies in NATO and across the world\, to be prepared to fight as a joint force in a multi-threat environment in order to achieve desired effects in all domains and at the strategic\, operational and tactical levels. In an increasingly complex operating environment\, creativity\, adaptability and resilience are in as high demand as ever. With defence planning being tested by the geopolitical landscape and the war in Ukraine\, it is critical for the armed forces to identify and invest in capabilities needed to face distinct threats and challenges emanating from all strategic directions; from state and non-state actors as well as from cyber and hybrid attacks. \nWhy attend?\nThis ‘Future Combat Air and Space (FCAS) Capabilities Summit’ brings together UK defence leaders\, its allies\, and industrial partners\, to assess the strategic direction for air and space combat capabilities now and in the future. \nA comprehensive agenda will review the next generation of combat\, intelligence\, surveillance\, reconnaissance and mobility aircraft\, and assess how these will be integrated into existing fleets and weapon systems\, maintain interoperability across alliances and improve operational resilience and effectiveness of European air forces. There will be interactive discussions on the role and capabilities of unmanned combat aerial vehicles and new rotary-wing platforms to deliver air supremacy in multi-domain operations\, including on land and maritime scenarios. Our speakers will also prioritise the growing importance of the space domain\, emerging cyber strategies and central role of cross-domain intelligence sharing to execute operations on the modern battlefield. Beyond evaluating technological and tactical approaches\, this conference will tackle how to secure sovereign and allied defence-critical supply chains\, establish on-shore industrial capabilities and leverage new manufacturing innovations. \nWho should attend?\nIf you are operating within air and space defence capabilities this is a unique opportunity to network with senior decision-makers\, budget holders and military leaders\, and be part of a discussion on future programmes with a highly specialised group of defence stakeholders\, right in the centre of London. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n More information

SUMMARY:Ultraefficient Aircraft Technologies - Key Building Blocks on the Way to Sustaineable Flight
DESCRIPTION:Mini Symposium in cooperation between the DGLR (Fachbereich L2 – Bemannte Luftfahrzeuge) and the Air and Space Academy \nUltraefficient Aircraft technologies for low drag\, low weight and low specific fuel consumption are more important than ever to master the challenge towards more sustainable flight. Significant efficiency improvements are mandatory to limit the fuel consumption for next generation aircraft\, either to drastically reduce the CO2-impact from still fossile kerosene based propulsion or to mitigate the drawback from the significant affordability challenge of novel zero emission fuels (SAF or H2). \nBesides this efficiency challenge also a the capability for more flexible flight trajectories is key\, to mitigate non-CO2 impacts on global warming (such as contrails) and to drastically cut noise emissions \nNevertheless an full compliance in terms of certifiability\, manageable manufacturing cost and full operational compatibility to the air transport system are crucial requirements to ensure economically viable future products. \nOn this mini symposium a group of experts from DLR\, Airbus\, Bauhaus Luftfahrt\, Universities and DGLR & AAE will present and discuss the challenges and latest technological initiatives and developments in short lectures and pitches. An extensive podium discussion with the lectures and the audience will conclude the symposium. \nProgramme:\n17.00 – Welcome by AAE (J. Klenner) & DGLR (D. Reckzeh) \n17.15  – Setting the scene: The Zero Global Warming impact challenge for aviation (Bauhaus Luftfahrt\, Mirko Hornung) . \n17.30 – Up to the limits of physics: The -50% aircraft (DLR\, AAE\, Cord Rossow) \n17:45 – Integration of advanced propulsion and novel energy carriers (NFL / TU Braunschweig\, Jens Friedrichs) \n18.10 – Ultraefficient Aircraft Technology (Airbus\, D.Reckzeh) \n18:25 – Building the future disruptive wing (structures\, integration\, industrialization concepts) (DLR\, Tobias Wille) \n18.45 – Break / Coffee & Snacks \n19.15 – Advanced Aircraft Design competence in the academic landscape (RWTH Aachen\, Eike Stumpf) \n19:30 – Digital & Integrated chains “up to certification” (DLR\, Kristof Risse) \n19:45 – Panel Discussion and Q&A from Auditorium \n \n Inscription obligatoire (Site web de la DGLR)\n \n \n \n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:RAeS Conference - Towards a Space Enabled Net Zero Earth
DESCRIPTION:Continuous observations from satellites over multiple decades have provided a critical contribution to our knowledge and understanding of climate change. This incredible technology has helped determine accurate variations of key climate parameters such as sea level\, greenhouse gases\, arctic sea ice and forest cover. \nGoing forward into the new decade the space sector is showing continued resilience and growth and is advancing rapidly with exciting satellite missions planned which will enable observations at higher resolution of environmental parameters such as air quality\, flood risk and lake levels. Such observations at the local level will also help allow businesses across the globe to assess their climate risk in sectors such as finance & insurance\, cities and built environment\, and critical infrastructure. Furthermore\, satellite navigation and communication technologies are crucial across sectors such as aviation and maritime in helping to reduce carbon footprint. \nLonger term still\, space technology can offer some global net zero game-changers before 2050 where the UK can take a lead. An example is to harness solar power from space and to beam it securely and safely to a fixed area on the earth. \nConference objectives \n\nIdentify the innovations and actions using space technology that can help the UK (and the world) achieve net zero in line with pledges made at COP26.\nInvolve senior stakeholders in industry\, academia and government to debate our space-enabled vision\, and to leverage multi-year support from the public and private sector to drive forward new technology and exploitation delivery mechanisms.\n\nAll the above will form the basis of our exciting conference programme\, where a series of presentations and panel sessions will span the following topics: \n\nHow can we use space technology to innovatively monitor and attribute emissions to enable the monitoring of net zero global progress?\nHow we can integrate satellite information products to support businesses in assessing and mitigating climate and supply chain risk?\nWhat approaches can be utilised from satellite technology to enable the reduction of our carbon footprint from business and wider society?\nIs next generation technology to harness solar power from space a game changer or science fiction?\n\n  \n \n Information & registration

SUMMARY:55th 3AF International Conference AERO2020+1
DESCRIPTION:The 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics is an annual event organised by the French Aeronautics and Aerospace Society (3AF) at French venues known for their activity in the field of aeronautics and/or aerospace technology. \nThe Conference is an excellent opportunity for scientific exchange between scientists from industry\, research institutions and academia. Scientists and engineers from other fluid mechanics fields are also welcome. \nEach year the Conference addresses a different topic in the field of aerodynamics. It is organised on the basis of five halfdays of technical presentations\, each introduced by a keynote conference given by a recognised expert. The Conference is concluded by a technical visit in connection with the conference subject. \nIn 2021\, the Conference will be hosted by the Pprime Institute (CNRS\, ISAE-ENSMA\, University of Poitiers) in Poitiers. This 55th 3AF International Conference on Applied Aerodynamics (AERO2020+1) focuses on Turbulent flows in Aerodynamic Applications. \nTurbulent flow regimes\, compressible or otherwise\, are omnipresent in high-Reynolds-number aerodynamic systems. Accurate prediction is required to anticipate and optimise the performance of new concepts. Optimisation is particularly important where the reduction of chemical and noise pollution is concerned. Robustness and safety for real weather and varying environmental conditions are also critical for aeronautical/terrestrial transportation and for renewable energy industries. These constraints have driven significant progress in the academic and industrial communities in recent years\, for instance in the fields of Hybrid\, Large-Eddy simulation and Lattice-Boltzmann approaches for the modelling and analysis of unsteady industrial flows; or in the development of measurement methodologies that are now frequently used in the context of data-driven modelling. New theoretical frameworks have appeared for the description of out-of-equilibrium turbulence\, and for the reduction and modelling of coherent structures and their sound radiation. These frameworks provide a foundation for the development of flow-control strategies. The prediction of transition to turbulence in complex flows\, particularly important in the aeronautical sector\, is also an active domain. \nMore information : www.3af-aerodynamics2020.com

SUMMARY:Peer Support – Managing the Expectations
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Flight Captain Hans RAHMANN\, Former Lufthansa Pilot\, Director MayDay Foundation \nIncreased technology has meant that the role of pilots has changed and might be thought to be easier and less stressful\, but in many areas this is certainly not the case which can lead to abnormalities in a pilot’s behaviour and performance directly affecting flight safety. A requirement for a safe operation is a sympathetic management and an understanding/supportive relationship between crew members so any changes in behaviour/personal feelings may be discussed and highlighted if necessary\, perhaps also involving families. \nHans Rahmann will describe how his MayDay foundation is furthering this cause by working to boost the long running Peer Support Programmes in his lecture as follows: \nWhere Control is fair and Trust is just \n\nResults of the Task Force after the German Wings Accident in 2015 led to new EASA Regulations.\nThese have to be implemented until August 2020.\nOne of their main focusses is based on Peer Support Programmes (PSPs).\nEPPSI (European Pilot Peer Support Initiative)\, being part of the advisory body\, supported EASA with expertise from running PSPs for 25+ years.\nThe expectations of the public and the industry need a realistic consideration:\n\nWhat are prerequisites of PSPs\, what is life like\, what can be achieved and how?\nWhat is wishful thinking\, where are limits?

SUMMARY:Planetary Exploration\, Horizon 2061
DESCRIPTION:Why Horizon 2061?\n\n2061 will be the centennial of the first human space flight and of President Kennedy’s Moon address to Congress\n2061 will see the return of comet P/Halley in the inner solar system\, reminding us of the international fleet of spacecraft which flew by it in 1986 !\n\nThus\, 2061 is a symbolic date choice which allows us to connect robotic and manned exploration  in the same\, single perspective ! \n“Planetary Exploration\, Horizon 2061” is a long-term foresight exercise initially proposed by the Air and Space Academy and led by scientists\, engineers and technology experts heavily involved in planetary sciences and in the space exploration of the Solar System. Its ultimate objective is to draw up to the 2061 horizon a long-term picture of the four pillars of planetary exploration: \n\nour major scientific questions on planetary systems;\nthe different types of space missions that we need to fly to address these questions;\nthe key technologies we need to master to make these missions flyable;\nthe ground-based and space-based infrastructures needed in support to these missions.\n\nThe year 2061 symbolically represents our intention to encompass both robotic and human exploration in the same perspective. Its distant horizon\, located well beyond the usual horizons of the planning exercises of space agencies\, avoids any possible confusion with them and is intended to “free the imaginations” : imaginations of planetary scientists\, who are invited to formulate what they think are the most relevant and important scientific questions independently of the a priori technical possibility of answering them ;  imaginations of engineers and technology experts\, who are invited to contribute to the exercise by looking for innovative technical solutions that will make it possible to fly the challenging space missions that will allow us to address these questions. \nFour main objectives can be reached via this dialogue between scientists and engineers: \n\nIdentify the technologies and infrastructures that will be needed to address our major scientific questions;\nprovide a broad spectrum of national space missions of diverse sizes and complexity levels all contributing to address these questions;\ninspire coordination and collaborations between the different players of planetary exploration to better meet technology challenges and fly these missions;\nshare with the public and public/private leaders the major scientific questions and technological challenges of planetary exploration.\n\nThe “Horizon 2061” exercise involves three successive steps designed to progressively build the three pillars. Its third step\, the “Horizon 2061 synthesis workshop“\, will be hosted by IAS in Toulouse from September 11th to 13th\, 2019. Its tentative conclusions will be presented for discussion at the joint EPSC-DPS meeting in Geneva (September 15th to 20th\, 2019)\, and later for discussion and final approval at the COSPAR General Assembly (Sydney\, August 15th to 23rd\, 2020). \n\n\n\nMore information on : www.horizon2061.cnrs.fr

SUMMARY:Chang'e\, or the call of the Moon
DESCRIPTION:From legend to reality\, the Chinese Moon exploration programme. \nLecture by Linli GUO\, Chief Engineer at the Chinese Academy of Space Technology (CAST). \nModerated by Michel BLANC\, astronomer\, IRAP/Midi-Pyrénées Observatory\, UPS-CNRS; Executive Director\, International Space Science Institute in Beijing\, AAE Member . Organised in partnership with the Air and Space Academy and IRAP/OMP/CNRS as part of “2019: the Moon in all its states!” \nThe call of the moon has existed in Chinese culture since ancient times\, with the legend of the beautiful Chang’e\, Goddess of the Moon\, whose flight to this satellite is celebrated every autumn. Today\, with the extraordinary expansion of the Chinese space exploration programme\, reality has already surpassed fiction: after Chang’e 4 which in January proceeded to a successful first landing on the hidden side\, China aims to bring back rock samples this year\, and then to explore the poles of our satellite in order to assess its resources. In the 2030s\, the goal is to transport a new wave of astronauts to the Moon\, and then to establish a visitable base. Linli GUO\, who played an important role in the design of the future Chinese lunar bases\, will recount this fascinating space adventure with the collaboration of Michel Blanc\, astrophysicist at IRAP and AAE member. \nFree admission (reservation recommended by clicking here) \n\nPhoto credit: © CNSA

SUMMARY:2019: the Moon in all its states!
DESCRIPTION:“From the manufacture of the first launchers to the development of space activities”\nLaunch lecture organised by Paul Andrieu of the AACE. \n\nWith Laurent Thierry\, doctor in history\, historian at La Coupole (Centre of history and memory in Nord Pas de Calais)\nClaude Favre\, granddaughter of a deportee from Toulouse\, and author of the biographies of the deportees of Toulouse and the region\nJean-Claude Renou\, space historian.\n\n“Immersed in the hell of Dora\, 9000 singular destinies”\nAn exhibition created by La Coupole\, the Centre for the history and memory of Nord Pas de Calais. From 15 to 31 May 2019. \nThis exhibition is part of the cultural programming of La Coupole within the calendar of the Dora deportees research project. Presented in preview at La Coupole and inaugurated on October 19\, 2018 in the presence of the main partners of the project and the families of deportees\, it prefigures a much more substantial exhibition that will be organised in 2020 on the occasion of the 75 years of the end of the Nazi concentration camp system and Mittelbau-Dora. \n“Children from Buschdorf” (film France Télévision – 46 minutes)\nA film by Anne-Sophie Chaumier Leconte\, Carole Filippi\, Oktay Senghul and Nicolas Ducrot. From May 15 to 31-continuous \n“Ulrich\, Christel\, Rüdiger or Ewald were young children in 1948. Without understanding why\, they leave a devastated Germany for France\, with their families. In Vernon\, a village in Normandy\, they benefit from preferential treatment\, are well housed and fed. Far from their roots\, living almost in autarchy\, the children recreate an imaginary world in the Woods: the Republic of Buschdorf… But who are they? Their story is unbelievable. Their fathers are all engineers of the Third Reich who worked on the very first ballistic missile: the famous v2. In secret\, France recovered them to design the first French rockets. With the testimony of these children and the unpublished archives of their fathers\, we reveal one of the most unknown stories of the post-war period. “ \n\nFree entry \n\nThis event is organised at the Cité de l’espace by les Amis de la Fondation pour la Mémoire de la Déportation (Délégation 31) with the support of ONAC\, La Coupole\, les Amis de la Cité de l’espace\, 3AF\, AAE and CNES. \nLearn more about “2019: the Moon in all its aspects!”

SUMMARY:New ideas about dark matter
DESCRIPTION:Lecture presented by Françoise COMBES\, French Académie des Sciences\, Bureau des longitudes\, College de France\, Observatoire de Paris \nThe problem of missing mass in the universe\, on a scale of galaxies\, of large structures\, and especially of overall content\, is a multi-faceted enigma. Since 1985\, we know that this matter is non-baryonic and does not exist in the standard particle model. The main candidate is the neutralino\, the most stable neutral particle in the hierarchy of super-symmetrical particles. However\, supersymmetry does not appear as expected in the LHC experiments at CERN. Many other models have flourished in recent years\, we will describe the main: axions\, superfluid matter\, condensate of Bose-Einstein\, sterile neutrinos\, modified gravity… \nFree entry within the limit of available seats \n\nIn collaboration with the Department of Geosciences\, Ecole Normale Superieure.
