Taikonauts conquer space: China’s manned space program

Replay of the lecture by Philippe Coué, member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), June 25, 2025, Médiathèque José Cabanis, Toulouse

China has been planning to send its citizens into the cosmos since the start of its space program in the 1960s. But it wasn’t until the end of the twentieth century and China’s economic take-off that this goal became a reality. Today, Chinese taikonauts occupy Earth orbit on a permanent basis, and are preparing to walk on the Moon before the end of this decade. They will then settle there permanently to prepare the next step: Mars.
