How Airbus overtook Boeing thanks to the success of the A320 Family

Replay of the conference held on March 26, 2024 at the Médiathèque José Cabanis – Toulouse (in French)

By Georges Ville, 60 years with Airbus, former president of AAE

In 1981, Airbus Industrie turned its attention to the single-aisle market, and in 1984, with the support of Air France, launched the CFM56-powered A320 family. Technological innovations and visionary choices in the definition of the aircraft helped anticipate its development towards the A320 neo; Boeing tried to follow suit, but not without risk, with the 737 Max. Airbus thus caught up with Boeing in 1999, and will be ahead of it in 2019. The speaker will recall this winning strategy and the lessons for future generations.
